New car smell not so nice

rander3127@gmail.com - 31 Jan 2006 17:01 GMT
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - A Michigan environmental group is charging
that at least part of the so-called "new car smell" is toxic, and that
the interior of an automobile has dangerous levels of various
chemicals.

The report, "Toxic at any speed," comes from The Ecology Center, an Ann
Arbor, Mich.-based group. It reports that PBDEs, used as fire
retardants, and phthalates, used primarily to soften PVC plastics, are
found in dangerous amounts in dust and windshield film samples.

It called for tougher regulations to phase out the use of the chemicals
as well as voluntary moves by the auto manufacturers to stop using the
products inside of new vehicles.

It also suggested that car owners take steps to reduce the release and
breakdown of these chemicals by using solar reflectors, ventilating car
interiors, and parking outside of sunlight whenever possible.

The group says that phthalates are partly responsible for the smell
associated with new cars.

Drivers and passengers are exposed to these chemicals through
inhalation and contact with dust, according to the group's report.

"These groups of chemicals have been linked to birth defects, impaired
learning, liver toxicity, premature births and early puberty in
laboratory animals, among other serious health problems," according to
the report.

"We can no longer rely just on seatbelts and airbags to keep us safe in
cars," said a statement from Jeff Gearhart, the Ecology Center's Clean
Car Campaign Director who co-authored the report. "Our research shows
that autos are chemical reactors, releasing toxins before we even turn
on the ignition. There are safer alternatives to these chemicals, and
innovative companies that develop them first will likely be rewarded by
consumers."

The group found Volvo was found to have the lowest levels of phthalates
and the second-lowest levels of PBDEs, which it said made the Ford
Motor Co. (Research)-owned unit the industry leader in terms of indoor
air quality. Volvo also has the toughest policies for phasing out these
chemicals.

Other auto manufacturers had more mixed records on the two types of
chemicals, according to the group's survey. For example, Korean auto
manufacturer Hyundai had the lowest level of PBDEs, but the highest
level of phthalates.

The group said it was told by Ford officials that the auto manufacturer
has eliminated PBDEs from "interior components that customers may come
into contact with." Ford had among the lowest level of PBDEs in its
vehicles, and General Motors (Research) and BMW vehicles also had
lower-than-average levels for all chemicals tested. But Mercedes,
Chrysler, Toyota and Subaru had higher-than-average levels of both
PBDEs and phthalates.

In response to the study, one industry group defended the use of PBDEs
as an important contributor to vehicle safety.

The Bromine Science and Environmental Forum said in a statement that
PBDEs known as Deca-BDE have been extensively studied in the U.S. and
Europe -- including a 10-year-long risk assessment -- and found to be
safe for continued use.

"If automobile manufacturers follow the guidance in the report, it
could result in lowering fire safety for the public, as well as
promoting the use of unidentified alternative substances about which
very little may be known," said the group's statement. It said it is
crucial that autos have the best possible flame retardants available in
case of accidents.

"In 2004 alone, there were approximately 297,000 car fires in the
United States, leading to 550 deaths. If effective flame retardants
were not used, this number would certainly be higher," the group's
statement said.

Auto manufacturers have already agreed to phase out two of the three
flame-retardant chemicals cited in the report, Eron Shosteck, a
spokesman for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, told the
Detroit News. The remaining chemical has been studied by the European
Union for 10 years and has been proven safe, Shosteck said.

The report was released Jan. 11 during the North American International
Auto Show in Detroit, but it received little attention outside of
Michigan.

I hate the overuse of the "F" bomb.

As a geezer with some pretty good moments to remember, and hopefully more
to come, I think it should be used sparingly... in moments of passion and
in private...

However, I'll call this 'passion'... Fcuk THEM.. and Fcuk YOU, Rich!!!

That is becoming obviously true, I did not expect it to happen quite

Next up....

A Michigan environmental group has issued a study report that claims up
to 500,000 people, mostly middle class elderly, die from side-effects of
"New Car Smell' each year.

"We have previously reported on the serious effects of chemical
outgassing in these new cars... but these unfortunates were set in their
ways of buying new if they could afford it." said Dudley Flora-Smith of
the Michigan Anti-Plasticizerer and Tea Group society.

"But now they are dead, having paid the price for their materialistic
profligacy. We are thinking of asking the ACLU to inquire into the
possibility of filing a class-action suit on their estates' behalf"

"But it's not only the elderly that suffer," Flora-Smith continued "
Exposing infants and newborn to the acrid atmosphere has its price, as
well."

Citing the obvious increase in childhood asthma, he adds that "increased
addiction to "foolers" - vinyl or latex nipple substitutes- on the part
of infants, and the attraction of teens to 'huffing canned chemicals'
also are related.

"The odor of the noxious gasses has its effects on the brain's pleasure
centers and sets up susceptibility to various life-long addictions!"

Rumored to be considering joining the effort is the UAW, and the
'National Association of car detailers and dealer wash-boys'. Both on
OSHA workplace safety grounds.

However the associated study into whether the inclusion of the odor is an
intentional plot by automakers to create an addiction to buying new cars,
may result in the former dropping out of the effort.

If that should happen, the Michigan Group intends to appeal to George
Soros or MoveOn.org, as they imply it might be related, somehow, to a
Bush Administration plot to kill off seniors, thus allowing reduction in
funding for the recently passed Medicaid Prescription Bill.

Asked for comment on this, Howard Dean, DNC party chair said; "It wouldnt
surprise me a bit... we've already uncovered the corrupt GOP plot to
victimize poor Indians just trying to scrape up enough money from bingo
parlours to fund their own schools, why not MORE tax cuts by killing off
the elderly?"

Sen Ted Kennedy concurred in a separate statement: "Not only that, I can
tell you that the smell itself clouds judgement, especially when combined
with a glass or two of wine at dinner and might result in unforeseen
romantic attraction and subsequent driving off a bridge, somewhere."

Sen John Kerry's office said he was awaiting the results of a poll on the
subject prior to making a statement.

Neither Jack Abramoff or any of several K Street lobbyist groups returned
our calls.

Researchers for this news desk have found that Fidel Castro anticipated
this problem years ago, when he instituted his policy of recycling older
cars rather than importing newer ones.  His mention of that noxious new-
car odor in one of his famous 4 hour speeches was previously thought to
be 'just filler'!

There doesnt seem to be much in the way of international reaction,
otherwise.
Though a UN source, who declined to be identified, said from Secretary
General Kofi Annan's office, that "...it might explain what happened to
that luxury car" bought by Annan's son Kojo and billed to the UN.
"Perhaps he was offended by that odor and had it buried somewhere so it
wouldnt affect anyone else" the staffer speculated.

Lined up against the suit:
"National Association of Undertakers and Embalmers", who themselves have
fallen under the scrutiny of that Michigan group for use of potentially
hazardous chemicals in the workplace.

- This just in..the UK Liberal Party, who are writing up laws on how
owners must treat and care for their pets are thinking of including a
clause that classifies an owner who transport a pet in any auto less than
two years old, might be subject to investigation by council 'pet police'.

Breaking, from Channel 4, Columbus:
{Lede: SUV causes Highway closure}

A 6 mile stretch of west-bound I-70 was closed for three hours this morning
after a motorist called 911 and complained of her 90 year-old mother
fainting, possibly due to 'new-car' smell.

The Franklin County Haz-Mat team was called but were delayed in arriving,
having been previously called out to a gas spill which occured while  a
Hilliard resident was refueling his snow-blower.

No one was injured in the Hilliard incident but the condition of the SUV
passenger is not yet determined.

I have six months to live.  I owned a new car in 1990, and have since
developed an inoperable brain tumor, which explains my behavior.

I know Im going to get FLAMED for this, but we need to get more of
the "middle class middle aged people" to buy new cars,  that way, us
"almost there"  58 year olds can hopefully still have some Social
Security benefits when we get to be "middle class middle aged"
<wink>  :))

Pot, your kettle is calling. There was nothing "trash" about Kate's
message, you on the other hand are taken to racial slurs, epithets and
general foul language all in off topic, top posting troll form. I am
archiving every post you make. A person must have a truly lonely life to
spend time on the Internet for the sole purpose making people hate him.

Like an unruly child..... if nobody is paying attention, do something bad or
unacceptable and people will notice you..... it matters not if they are
chastising or praising. Either way, the child gets the attention he or she
is craving... And, I would suppose, the same holds true for a child in an
adults body...

They are buying them by the truckload, so don't you worry.  The geezers
will start dropping like flies out of their neato platic machines in no
time, and we who are still on the upswing will get all the spoils...

Loved it... and I can add my own experience.... Back in 86, my loving bride
and I bought our first brand new car.... Since inhaling those new car fumes,
we have aged nearly 20 years and continue to get older by the day. We both
realize that, allowed to continue, this aging process will surely mean our
death. Doctors are mystified at this insidious, chronic condition and offer
us little hope.

Since that first incident, we have made the mistake of purchasing other new
vehicles and, personally, I feel it has compounded the problem. I'm only 29
yet I feel like I'm 55. I've been 29 for the past 26 years now... this is
not something I would likely forget.... yet this insidious new car smell is
disfiguring me.... My arms are no longer long enough to read the newspaper
(which is probably why I didn't see this warning in the first place).... and
now I find that gravity does, indeed, work. My wife has noticed this too
since there are some things that just don't appear to be where they used to
be.

There are certain pleasures that I used to revel in all night long.... now I
find that what I used to do all night, takes me all night to do.

I think the world would be a much safer place if the inside of a new car
smelled like pickled egg and warm beer farts... kind of like a "dutch oven"
of comfort...

God! Sounds like my former father-in-law who, at the mandate of the
Mrs, was forced to retreat to the garage with his cronies to partake
of limburger cheese and beer... which is how he expanded his garage
from one car to three and an office.... and got the oil burning wood
stove installed. : 0 )
