Bill Jarrett - 01 May 2006 14:22 GMT Can you drive with the top down and without the tonneau on, without damaging the top? At lower speeds? A highway speeds?
The car doesn't yet have 1000 km (600 miles) on it. Will the mileage improve? ( V6 - 5 speed auto transmission) Yesterday we drove 300 km mostly on cruise at 110km/hr and only got 31mpg (imperial gallon).
Thanks

Larry - 02 May 2006 04:11 GMT I get 25 mpg (US gallons) on the highway in my 06 GT 5spd, 20mpg around town with a little highway. Larry

The funny thing is...if I'm cruising down the freeway in overdrive I get better gas mileage at 80mph than I do at 60mph.

Sounds like you need more gearing..!
Signature Yeh, I'm a Krusty old Geezer, putting up with my 'smartass' is the price you pay..DEAL with it!

Yeah...the engine is practically lugging @ 60 when it's in OD. When the speed limit is 75, I'm not taking much of a chance of getting any tickets. =D

Kate - 02 May 2006 14:29 GMT :I get 25 mpg (US gallons) on the highway in my 06 GT 5spd, 20mpg around town : with a little highway. : Larry Well *I* get between 14-16 but I'm pushing 4:10s on each end and can climb mountains and rocks and swim through mud. ;¬D Kate 06 Rubicon
Paul - 07 May 2006 14:57 GMT > 31 mpg (Imperial gallons) is 24.8 mpg U.S. gallons Mine has 1200 miles on it and I am lucky to get 20MPG. But then again, I don't cruise at 70MPh which may have a lot to do with it. I'm sure I can get better number if I do a similar run, but my commute is only like 8 miles highway (at 85/80 MPH) and 3 miles top&go traffic.

[quoted text clipped - 6 lines] > >Bill (A young at heart old fart) The data you quote equates to 25 MPH (American Gallon) which is within the EPA guidelines of 19/25 for the V-6. You may see a slight rise in mileage as you get more miles on the car, however I wouldn't anticipate it, rather be happy if you see it and consider it a "pleasant suprise"
As for driving without the tonneau, for short trips it shouldn't matter, but who would want a "sporty car" and screw up the illusion with a "naked convertible top" ???
You do have an "image" to keep LOL

Kate - 01 May 2006 21:19 GMT : Can you drive with the top down and without the tonneau on, without damaging : the top? This depends on your idea of damage. If you are thinking of WIND damage, no problem, you can drive faster with the tonneau off than you can with it on. It will possibly blow off at around 90. I had one come off on me while running 85 down teh freeway. It really raised hell with the traffic let me tell ya, and then I had to turn around and go get it.
If you are thinking of SUN damage, you should ALWAYS use your tonneau, or the sun will fade the headliner making it prematurely ugly and causing the early onset of fabric rot. It fades to an ugly reddish brown color. It will also allow more dirt to get into the fabric.
:At lower speeds? A highway speeds? Any speed should be ok, see above.

( V6 - 5 speed auto transmission) Yesterday we drove 300 km mostly : on cruise at 110km/hr and only got 31mpg (imperial gallon). Bill - hon - you don't buy a Mustang for fuel economy. Love it for what it is. If the mileage improves, all the better, but don't get your hopes up. Think of your new baby as a high maintenance woman. She's expensive, but worth it. I'm too blonde to do the conversion from metric to mpg but I'm guessing it's not great.
My Rubicon is a 6 banger and only gets 14-16 mpg. Much less than my 98 Cobra got.

Itsfrom Click - 01 May 2006 23:40 GMT just for comparison, my '06 GT convert is getting 20 mpg (US) around town, so hoping for 24+ on the road.
note that with the redesigned top mechanism for '05, the boot (tonneau) is an option as Ford sez it's not really necessary for top-down motoring........but I plan to put mine on for anything but a quick top-down session........assuming we ever have any appropriate weather!
J. Michael Gilker - 02 May 2006 07:02 GMT When I got my GT convert in '03, Ford was including the tonneau for free and recommended it be used for long distance travel with the top down. After that car got totaled by a Jeep Liberty, I ordered an exact same configuration in an '04 at which time I was told that Ford wanted $$$ for it as an optional accessory. Funny how a shrinking profit margin turns "free and recommended" items into costly "optional accessories"! Needless to say, I kept mine from the '03, but have never used it. I'm much happier with the windscreen that I bought. Sure, I lose the use of the rear seat for passenger use, but being able to ride with the top down and not have the wind blowing down the back of my neck is far better. Besides, the rear seats really only offer storage room for my windshield sun screen and Mustang baseball cap anyway!

Mike, where did you get the windscreen and how does it mount? Can the top be raised with it in place?

J. Michael Gilker - 03 May 2006 07:17 GMT The windstop is a FORD accessory (2R3Z*76539A18*AA). When I got mine 2 years ago it listed for ~$277. I did find generic windstops online for less but with my Mustang Club discount, it brought the price down to be cheaper than the generics. Installation was simple, just unscrew 4 screws connecting the rear seat to the fabric cover, insert 2 brackets, and then screw in the screws. The front connectors slide in under the front seat belt housings and are tied down with an adjustable strap. With the brackets installed it takes less than 1 minute to install/remove the windstop (the top has to be down for that).
Yes, the top can be raised and lowered with the windstop in place with plenty of clearance. Additionally, the windstop is hinged so that it can be lowered to allow a clear view through the rear window without having to look through the mesh.

I have the top down 99% of the time on my commute with no tonneau. Even at highway speeds there is very little flapping that I can see in my rear view mirror. I'n not sure if my light bar contributes to that or not.

Itsfrom Click - 07 May 2006 15:41 GMT had mine on the highway for the first time yesterday....hundred or so miles at 70 mph and 30 miles mixed suburban......averaged 21.5 mpg US. since it still has less than 300 miles on it, assume it will improve. and thank goodness it takes regular - my Chrysler takes premium $$$$$$

driver@06.mustang.gt - 10 May 2006 02:20 GMT I just put 300 miles on my 06' GT convertible and pulled 23mpg on the trip. the car has about 2000 miles on it and I had the top up the whole way due to rain. I am happy with the mileage I am getting. I have owned many convertibles and have hardly ever used the tonneau only to dress it up.

I have had it since the middle of April and I have a 25 mile highway commute each day .. I also took it on a trip from Reading, PA to Richmond, VA (560 mile round trip)
I am averaging 23 MPG overall.. On the Long trip, I got 25 MPG.. Which is about the same as I was getting from my 2000 Mustang v-6, 5-speed coupe...
Very Pleased... There is NOTHING like cruising down the highway in a loud V-8, top down, with the stereo cranked up.. (especially when you pull up alongside one of those Rap-Thumping, Bumble-Bee sounding, Neon Lit, Fiberglass BodyKit Nightmare, 8 foot tall and 4 Wing, spoiler wearing, Eurotrash 'things' that seem to be all the rage these days... ) :-)
