2006 V6 or V8 ?

Tomas - 01 Jun 2006 03:00 GMT I just rented a 2006 Mustang convertible from Hertz with the V6 and I really like the car.
I've been wanting a 'stang for a long time and now that I'm approaching retirement age, the time has come. Yep, another grey haired old fart clogging the highways :)
I rented the car for a few days to see how I like it.
So anyway, cars are my passion and I have always been a Chevy man with my current ride a 96 Impala SS. I do all my own work BTW and my SS has more than a few aftermarket parts.
So anyway, I am in a quandary as to which way I should go with my Mustang purchase.
Option 1: Go with the GT and most of the toys.
Option 2: Go with the convertible and the V6....
(I can't afford to go ragtop and GT, at least I don't think I can).
The rental I have has only has 700 miles on it and the V6 seems like a very strong puller but I am concerned as to the aftermarket parts situation with this motor compared to the V8.
Still, there is something really nice about the rag top and the entire driving experience. This one has the Pony Package and all the bells an whistles including larger rims/tires etc.
I keep all my cars for just about an eternity and my Impala has 370,000 miles on it and still runs strong and smooth. Original tranny and motor except for intake, water pump, some ignition stuff and cam.
So the question is what would you do?
TIA!!! Tomas
My Names Nobody - 01 Jun 2006 02:28 GMT GET THE V-8!
You only live once, why live with regrets related to your compromises? I'm sure you could find some creative way to finance the $6,000 difference...
I also rented a V-6, it was impressive. That is what convinced me to go in and try the V-8, now that is much more impressive...
Good Luck and enjoy your new GT...

You might also consider used, low mileage, versions of the V8, specifically the Bullitt; Cobra and Saleen.
I have a five speed manual Bullitt. Ford only made a few thousand of them. Only in 2001.
I bought mine with 600 miles on it at a very good price. This was my chance to get a stick V8.
You can search eBay.
An awesome car!

I've been able to get away with restoring "junk" as the wife calls it, but buying a fully restored '71 429 SCJ, if I could find one, would definitely get me homicided.
I've been years into restoring a `72 BB Vette ragtop and have to go begging & scraping every time I exceed my monthly allowance for this or that. The damn car is never going to get done at the rate I am going.
The frame & mechanicals are @ about 80%. Just need to reinstall the engine, tranny & rear-end which are all rebuilt as bullet proof. Still need to do the body work, get it painted & reassembled. Oh and new meats & rims, but since the ones I want are about $2k this year that is going to take a while too.

In '99 being the tender young age of 52, we did a 3 year lease on a '99 V6 Vert (couldn't afford the GT + vert, same as yourself), it was a fun car and got us back into a 'stang after being away from "CARS" for 25 or so years.
BUT after the first year I wished we'd gone the GT coupe route. As soon as the lease was up, ordered the '02 GT and have been happier than a pig in poop ever since. I plan on keeping this car a long long time, its my daily driver and track car, its my winter beater... I love the hell out of it.
Its currently undercoated, rustproofed, supercharged, lowered, subbed, chipped, methanol injected....the list goes on....complete list is here http://www.gtamc.com/forums/vbgarage.php?do=view&id=16
Get the GT.

Do not buy the V-6 for less, but end up paying 'more' long-term... Although, my 2000 v-6 5-speed coupe was very reliable over the 6.5 years I had it... The following things went wrong in it's history..
1. Rear Engine seal leaking shortly after purchase. (warranty) 2. Clutch at 40k, (related to rear seal).. Ford made good and replaced under warranty. 3. Water pump gasket at 110,000 4. Clutch at 100,000
I traded it in with about 130k on it... Still running well, although the suspension was starting to feel slightly 'loose'...
Other than that, just tires, oil, belts, and antifreeze

I do have to test drive the GT to see/feel what the difference is.

I could go out today and buy a V6 coupe. A V6 convertible, probably no problem. I could swing a new GT, but it would take a couple of days of serious negotiation with my wife. But that extra little bit for the GT convertible seems undoable right now, and that's the car I would buy.
Also like you, I tend to hold onto the cars I like for a long time, so it's only those few years of payments that are the hold-up. But those few years will fly by, and I'd still have a really... really nice car.
If you can make the numbers work, go for what you want. I would imagine that the V6 convertible would do well for you, but you'd always be wondering what life would be like with those two extra cylinders.

[quoted text clipped - 34 lines] > TIA!!! > Tomas Tomas:
I bought a 2000 V-6 Coupe in Sept of 1999. I bought it because:
1. Cheap Transportation ($18,750) the GT at the time was approx $25k I think. 2. I did a lot of driving for the job I do.. (IT consultant, Network Penetration Tester)
While the V-6 had decent power and pickup, I regretted not spending the extra money on the GT. I always wanted a convertible, but at that time I was working in Philadelphia and was uncomfortable having a convertible parked in the city. My situation has changed and I have a different job where I do not have to go into the city or drive nearly as often.
I too, keep cars 'forever'.. My '00 had 125,000 when I traded it in this past April. I had a '94 Explorer I bought new for a family car, sold it 12 years later with $150k..
I test drove the 2006 V-6, V-8, and the V-8 convertible.. I ended up buying the GT RagTop. The ride, power, sound, and the ragtop was well worth the extra money.. I bought GT Convertible for $31,500, sticker was $33,825
If you can afford it, you won't regret it... My $.02 is to get the GT ragtop... It's a rush every time you climb in and start it up. Gas mileage isn't too bad, according to the computer, I am getting 22 mpg, and believe me, my foot has been in the accelerator often..

Robert A. Plourde Jr. - 01 Jun 2006 15:33 GMT Go with what you can afford and what will make you happy.
About a year ago, I really wanted a new Mustang GT Vert and used Fords build web page to build the one I wanted. I then found out that my local dealer had one on the way which was close to what I wanted so I called them and put $500.00 down on it using a credit card.
When the car arrived, the dealer called me to come work out the deal. After taking it for a test drive, I felt it was an awesome drive but not really $35,000.00 awesome. So, I let the car go and got my money back. Meanwhile, I still wanted a Mustang but wasn't willing to part with all that cash so I started looking around at used one. Mind you, I think the exterior look of the new ones is awesome but the last model still looks quite good as well. So, I ended up finding a 2002 GT Vert with only 5600 miles on it. When I checked it out, I could not believe the condition it was in. It looked just like it was showroom new and wasn't even used. We negotiated $19,000.00 for the car and I have been extremely happy with it ever since. With all the money I saved, I've been adding to the car and now, it has a 2003 Mach1 hood with the ram air scoop, Mach1 grill delete, Mach1 spoiler, Mach1 side stripes, and I painted the rear wing flat black and painted the spot between the tail lights flat black. Also added white gauges and sequential turn signals. Next, I will move onto engine mods but I am extemely happy to have found a really great car at much less money than I wanted to pay.

[quoted text clipped - 34 lines] > TIA!!! > Tomas wadner - 01 Jun 2006 16:41 GMT I purchased a 2005 V-6 because of price and I'm very happy with my decision. Would the GT be better? Probably, but it didn't seem like a wise financial decision at the time. I do plan on upgrading in a year or so. The price on the V6 was right, the insurance is quite a bit cheaper, and the gas mileage is a bit better.
If this is a car you plan on keeping for a number of years, like you indicated, I'd maybe lean towards the GT myself. I knew I wanted a Mustang and I couldn't wait for a year to save up for the GT. So I'm going to sit on my V6 for 24 months. While I don't have the coolest Mustang I certainly have a much cooler car than 85% of the population.

My wife and I are in very similar circumstances to you.
We considered new vs used when the 05 came out and decided on used. After a year of shopping we couldn't find one equipped as we wanted.
We are happy we waited because the pony pack was introduced in 06 and we loved it.
We only live once, and are very happy that we bought the convertible this April. It is a great, reasonably priced car. The V6 is more than enough engine for an old fart.
Whatever you decide, (GT or V6) get the convertible. You won't be disappointed.

The car had 700 miles on it when I picked it up last Wed, now it has 1745 and it goes back tomorrow <snifff sniff cry cry!!>
I don't have time at the moment to post a detailed description of my experiences with this car and despite some of the worst rain the Northeast has had in years, way up north it was crystal clear so I had the top down 99 percent of the time.
Like I said, I'll post tomorrow (Sunday) under the same thread my driving experiences....

I too was very doubtful about buying a V6... remembering those horrible old V6 rentals... LOL! But after test driving a V6 I was very surprised at their performance!
Now a couple of things...
1) Aren't the rentals still "de-tuned" a bit? 2) Was your rental an automatic? The automatic suffers greatly from the programmed Torque Limiter. Don't know if you noticed... the car will pull very hard in 2nd and 3rd...even 4th.. but from a dead stop it's a bit of a dog... well, that is the torque management system! I
Now for around $400 you can pick up an SCT X-Cal2 handheld flasher... reprogram the car.. and when you step on the gas you won't believe you are driving the same car! The X-Cal2 fixes a lot of the short coming in the cars programming! Remove the torque management system and fixes the throttle delay! It will make a night and day difference in your car!
BTW... for me the difference in price between my V6 and GT was about $8000...
To see just how carried away you can get with a V6 you can check mine out at: http://www.tammyandjohn.com/Mustang/Screaming/Mustang.htm
We just pulled the N2O out and stuck a Vortech instead.. LOL!

First: I checked out your URL.. Nice Car! Has the engine been replaced since the #5 cylinder "Issue"?
The point of my post, and wasn't as clear on the second read through, was that my '00 V-6 was very reliable, in spite of the "Reliability Concerns" that were raised back then about it...
So, Consumer Reports concerns regarding the 05+ V-6 could be more 'alarmist' than real.. I myself, have never taken CR as 'gospel'..
The bottom line is that everyone should buy the Mustang that are happy with, and can afford.. We are all 'different'.. For me, the 06 GT, Leather, and Ragtop were the critical factors.. Others may have different requirements..

My Names Nobody - 04 Jun 2006 19:22 GMT > Now a couple of things... > > 1) Aren't the rentals still "de-tuned" a bit? I was just having this conversation with a friend yesterday. How do you suppose this de-tuning is accomplished? We all know that the parts changers working in Ford dealership shops can only flash newer programs, not selectively tune anything, or even step back to an older program. Do you believe these deliberately "crippled" cars are left that way when sold as used cars to the public? Do you think that could have any adverse effect on their resale value? Do you believe that the rental car companies have invested in the technology and infrastructure to address de-tuning/tuning issues that can't be addressed at the Ford dealership?
I have driven rental 05 & 06 V-6 mustangs, and test driven them off the dealers lots, I can say, I don't think there is a difference, I don't think anything is different between the rental car and the all other new V-6 Mustangs.
If anyone has any first hand knowledge of any de-tuning / tuning programs either at Ford, or within the rental car companies, please enlighten me. Who is doing it? Where, when and how are they doing it? I just don't think such a thing is going on.
Tomas - 05 Jun 2006 01:16 GMT > I agree with the previous poster... the 05+ V6 is NOTHING like previous > V6's... I too was very doubtful about buying a V6... remembering those > horrible old V6 rentals... LOL! But after test driving a V6 I was very > surprised at their performance! You are correct about the 05+ V6 because in the past I have driven rental Mustangs including an 04 (Yellow rag top last year) and the engine was nowhere near as smooth or powerful as the 06 I just rented. Also I had an 87 T-bird 3.8L for a while and it was a nightmare with head gasket problems and just about everything else that could go wrong :( Bought it used, sold it after a year. I've also driven my fair share of Taurus rentals and they sucked as well.
> Now a couple of things... > > 1) Aren't the rentals still "de-tuned" a bit? Nahh. That's an urban myth kinda like alligators in the NYC sewer system AFAIK anyway.
> 2) Was your rental an automatic? The automatic suffers greatly from > the programmed Torque Limiter. Don't know if you noticed... the car > will pull very hard in 2nd and 3rd...even 4th.. but from a dead stop > it's a bit of a dog... well, that is the torque management system! I Yes, I did notice this but I wasn't sure what it was? It seemed like the computer was getting confused or something and the car actually felt like it was in the wrong gear (too high). It kinda bogged down, almost like a weak accelerator pump from carb days, I found that you could fool it by goosing the throttle a little and then stomping on it. It didn't always work though. It was a bit weird but seeing as I'm not the jack rabbit start type it didn't really bother me.
For the record, this tranny has to be one of the smoothest I have ever experienced in any car excepting maybe a Lexus. It always seems to be in the right gear, doesn't hunt, has AMAZING pulling power in ALL GEARS... There is virtually no "wind up and go" factor, which I hate. IOW, some cars when you stomp the pedal at say 60mph the engine roars, and the car winds up and goes. I find that annoying. This car just downshifts smoothly and you feel the pulling of the engine instead of the roaring and of course you have a nice exhaust sound as well.
I liked passing slowpokes on 2 lane VT highways with no effort at all and then looking at the speedo and seeing 90 mph.
(My BEL RX65 is a must for driving in Vermont, the speed trap capital of the US)
Now my Impala SS (Vette motor) is no slouch, but it has no rush factor at all. It has so much torque however, from a standstill I can easily lite the tires or pull tree stumps out of the ground!
With the Mustang, cruise at 60 mph, stomp the gas and get pushed back in the seat as the car roars ahead. Pretty neat for a rental V6!
The V6 like I've said (10 times already!) is a very strong puller and the exhaust sounds wonderful but not obtrusive at all. It all makes for a very fun car to drive.
The suspension is very nice and tight and the car felt solid as a rock without being jittery. Expansion joints in the road go thump with a solid feel instead of a hop and skip I did notice a little tail spin when making quick right turns (real quick!), but it was totally controllable. This thing is VERY comfortable to ride in on long trips, which surprised me. The tight suspension does not cause driver fatigue on those long hauls and I will say it is just as comfortable as my Impala SS and more so in the seat department because the SS is like riding on a couch. Can you say back pain!
>snip----------------
> To see just how carried away you can get with a V6 you can check mine > out at: http://www.tammyandjohn.com/Mustang/Screaming/Mustang.htm Great site!!!!
So what about the rest of the car? Ok!! Here are some of my musings in no particular order.
This one had larger tires (I think?), aluminum rims, Shaker 500 sound system, Sirius sat.radio, vinyl power seats (drivers) and was a cranberry metallic red color. No fog lamps in the grill so I guess it didn't have Pony Package?
Radio is easy to use and sounds pretty good for a factory unit. I think it had a sub because I could feel/hear some thumping going on.
I'm also a musician/audiophile with a small project recording studio so I am sensitive towards crappy sounding audio. This one isn't bad. I like staying with the factory unit if at all possible so I would buy the biggest/best they make.
Seat adjusts easily, but I could not find a lumbar adjustment? It might be hidden somewhere?
I'm not sure I like the multi-position seat back thingie that you use to let passengers escape from the rear seat <bg!>. It seemed awkward to operate.
Trunk is quite large for a car this size and because it is flat and boxlike it is actually all useable space.
Turning circle seems quite tight which is good compared to the Saturn Vue I rented a couple of weeks ago that turned, well, it turned like a *large* truck and was so slow and sluggish it was dangerous.
Mileage, mostly highway hovered around 25 mpg and I was not easy on the throttle at all. Impressive IMHO.
A/C was ice cold and all controls were logical and easy to operate.
Not enough storage bins, etc...Oh well it is a sports car though :)
One thing that did bother me a little bit was that my right leg/knee rested on the right side of the lower dash and it became uncomfortable at times no matter how I positioned the seat. I think I would put a little foam rubber pad over there. I am 6'1" tall BTW and other than that I fit in the car extremely well which is not always the case.
Example: A Suburu Outback I rented required me to almost fall out of the seat to get out because no matter how I adjusted the seat/steering wheel, the steering wheel was almost resting on my knees.
Horrible car BTW.
One thing I noticed with these Mustangs, convertibles especially, if you don't want to attract attention, don't drive one!
Last one (04) I had was yellow and I figured it was the color.
Nope.
It's the car/convertible.
I had people honking, flashing lights and coming over to ask me about the car.
God, if I wasn't married.......well....let's just say this thing is a chick magnet as well as a testosterone builder :)
So there you have it.
As you can tell, I rent a lot of cars mostly on business trips and because my company is a gigantic Hertz customer, I get upgrades all the time and my contract always has free mileage.
This car was for pleasure, but I still get the business rate which in NY was $40.00/day with all miles free. This car normally goes for about $180/day with mileage extra.
For those asking questions about renting a Mustang from Hertz, here is how it works. Most major airports will have them on the lot, but you can't normally reserve a Mustang or any other car (Except minivans and Expeditions)but you can reserve a class of car.
What I did was choose a small location near my home and called them directly and spoke to the manager. She took my name, told me to make my Gold Reservation for a "Standard Class, Grand Am/Alero etc) and she would see what she could do. Bottom line was they had the Mustang waiting for me when I went to pick the car up.
Free upgrade for me.
Nice letter to Hertz thanking them for making my day!
You could also take the "go to the airport and ask method" which from my experience will usually work if you go midweek. Be nice to the people and just ask them.
For those that don't know, rental cars for Gold Card members (sign up, it doesn't cost a dime I believe) who work for companies with large corporate accounts are along the lines of airline tickets. The price you pay, has no bearing at all on the car you drive just like the person sitting next to you on the plane may have paid 5 times what you paid for the same ticket.
My contract says I have to rent a class C car or lower, which is a standard car and my reservations always say Class C.
I've driven Volvo's (Prestige car), Outbacks, SUV's, Mustangs and so forth all at the same Class C rate.
There is no rhyme or reason to it for corporate Gold Card members. the yellow 04 Mustang I got was just the car they gave me.
So that's it! I'm still trying to decide between a V6 rag top or a V8 coupe. I think I will visit the dealer this week and test drive the V8 to see what it's got :)
Thanks again for all the advice and if you have any ?? fire away and I will do my best!
Tomas
