Rebuilding 351 C. Going to install the distributor, and low and behold it
won't go all the way in with the oil pump shaft in. With it out dist goes in
easily. If you haven't guessed, yes I SHOULD have put it in with the oil
pump. Question is will everybody be happy without the ring on the oil pump
shaft? Or do I have to raise engine, take out oil pan, take out oil pump,
and then put it all back together.
I REALLY do not want to do all that again, but if the ring serves some
importance, it gotta be done!

If you leave the ring off, here is what will happen.
The first time you remove the distributor, the shaft will be pulled out of
the oil pump and then it will fall off the distributor and into the oil pan.
At that future time you will get to drop the pan and do it right.
