Want to replace the front shocks on my '71 Grande M-code.
Would stock shocks fit the bill or should I spring for Koni
or Bilstein?  The car is a daily driver with occasional trips
to the mountains were I push the car a bit :)

For a daily driver, even "pushing" it a bit, KYBs should be fine. If
you were racing, you might move up.

The KYB Gas-A-Just seem like a good buy.  Probably replace all
four shocks now.
Thanks for the input.

On a daily driver like mine, which is good enough to be a show car at
lower level shows (not the bottom of the pit type :0) it doesn't make
a lot of sense to me to go for high priced equipment that I will
never, or will rarely ever put to it's fullest abilities. For example,
I could spend $180 for a PST 7/8" rear sway bar, or I can buy one for
$90. Both are poly bushing. Both are 7/8". Both are powder coated.
I can easily put that other $90 to use on something else.... like gas
for the tank. :0)  The only person who is apt to see what it looks
like is the jaywalker I just rolled over. :0)

Which is not to say buy cheap stuff. Compare it. Like I kept the
original distibutor and dropped in a Pertronix electronic module
instead of buying a Pertronix distributor. Saved some bucks and it
does just fine for me.  What are you going to use? Beyond that, are
you just throwing money away on a name and more part than you will
ever need.

I have a 300 watt stereo system that does just fine. My neighbors
still like me, and the old couple sitting next to me at the stop light
are not nearly as annoyed as I am with the guy in the turn lane to my
right that has 10,000 watts of power that doesn't really make his
music sound better.... just louder. I guess that's so he can't tell
how bad that crap he is playing really sounds. :0)

It's your car. You can spend whatever you want. This is just how I see
it for myself.

My car is not even bottom of the pit.  Mechanically the car is in great
shape.
Just needs a lot of body and interior work.  I am not afraid to pick up a
date
in it, just needs work.  Would not hesitate to drive it across the country
tomorrow.

My female friends call it a "guy thing".  There is this urge to spend money
even
there is nothing wrong it.  Besides the shocks, the current project is to
install
a center console.  Got one on eBay from a '70 Mach1.  Fixed the clock and
now
it just needs painting.  I don't even know if it needs shocks.  How can you
tell?

Thanks for your advice, it was well received.

Bounce each corner (push down smartly and release). It shouldn't
bounce more than a couple of times, getting shorter each time. If it
doesn't bounce, or if it continues to bounce, you probably have a
problem. Also, if you can push down on a corner and have to physically
lift it back up you have a problem.

Like Spike said, why spend more money if you are not going to realize any
real benefit from it?

If you think you will actually realize some benefit from an upgraded shock
absorber over the stock shock absorber with stock suspension parts, it might
be worth it to you.  If you are not exceeding the abilities of the stock
shock absorber, you will NOT realize any benefit from a "better" shock
absorber.

I personally have never realized any benefit over stock from a more
expensive replacement shock absorber on any daily driver type vehicle.

Good luck

Expensive shocks are not worth it.
I got some KYBs car is 15 years old.
A good set of summer tires is worth it, though.
