Sick of Valvoline Oil Change

I don't have the room to do my own oil changes, so I went to Valvoline's
Jiffylube knockoff. I asked for oil and a new oil filter. The guy seemed
insulted and said they always include the filter. He then proceeded to
inspect all over my car and suggest stuff for me to buy. I mentioned that I
was going to take my car to the dealer and have them do all that stuff. Then
he went on and on about how much cheaper they can do it - belts, changing
tranny fluids, etc. I'm sorry, but I don't think the dropouts at Valvoline
need to pull my car apart. Then I paid for my $56 oil change and left -
muttering about how these guys need to STFU and try not to strip out my oil
plug.

You paid $56 for an oil change?  It had to be for synthetic oil at that
price.  Around here a garden variety change is about $32.  Those places
pray on women like they are serial rapists.

"pray on women"  "ON YOUR KNEES 3!7C5!!!"  ROFL, prey. But, yeah
they do and guys that have the mechanical aptitude of a 9yo also. I know
someone who paid over $1000 for a brake job including turning AND
resurfacing the rotors. On a Dodge Neon that had about 14,000 miles on it.

I didn't know the grammar police were out tonight.  A friend of mine had
a VW bus that he took to a garage for brake work.  He was given a quote
of $1,200 to fix his problem.  When I asked him what the problem was he
said his parking brake didn't work.  Twenty minutes later after
adjusting the rear brakes with a screw driver, all was well again.  If
everyone would request their old parts be returned to them then most of
the rip offs would not occur, IMO.

So, if you don't trust "dropouts to change a belt, why would you let
them change the oil?

You paid $56 for 5 quarts of Valvoline and a filter???

Hum, that's more than an oil change costs at my local Ford dealer.  WTF?

So for $56 you a Valvoline brand mixture of synthetic and
conventional oil. If you're going to change it every 3-5K miles I think
I'd just use the cheap stuff.

Any SAE certified brand of conventional oil is good enough when it is
changed every 3k-4k miles.  IMO, the exception is if you live in a very
cold area where oil viscosity at startup can cause excessive wear and/or
difficult starting.  Even in hot climates the engine should never run
outside its upper temperature range if it has a properly working cooling
system.

That's more than an oil change with top of the line Amsoil and 2
filters...

Just for the record.... there are a lot of businesses whose bread and
butter is the "extras" they can talk you into. One simple example is
the extended warrantee (although in my next life I plan to put out the
bucks for the extended warrantee on my body :0). Buy a car, buy a
home, a boat, or whatever. They'll try to talk you into upgrades.
Upgrade the carpeting, upgrde the stereo, upgrade the trailer. I don't
condone it, but, I know as part of the job employees are instructed to
push customers to get those add ons because they'll cost more if you
decide to add them later, or some other excuse. My last 65 Mustang
went to JippyLube and they wanted to drill and install a drain in the
C4 tranny pan to make it easier to change the fluid. I told them 'no
thanks just change the oil as I asked.' Next thing I know is the
manager is in my face telling me how important this simple little task
is, and he got miffed when I declined. A few blocks away is a JiffLube
that has never tried to talk me into the extras.

Good for you.

There were more problems then I could list, but I'm limited to not
spending the WHOLE DAY telling you all the things that were bad about
them.  Here are a few: Dead Server (way too many times), Not
compatible with Firefox (they fixed it I think), Some security bug-
that made my SCREEN FREEZE.. etc.

What makes you think you are any safer at the stealership?  I had the
step-daughter take the mini-van to the dealership for a simple oil
change...  She ended up calling me in a panic... They told her the van
needed an IMMEDIATE brake job and one of the hubs was bad... and they
felt it was such a safety issue they couldn't let her drive home...
and it was going to be about $600...  I knew there was no problem with
the van... brake pads still had like 50% left...  The dropouts working
at the dealership just seen her as an easy target...
