It's a land of free choice.  If you choice is an economy consisting of
lawyers, coffee servers and I.T. techs instead of real industries,
well that's your choice.  And lets face it, you don't drive the JAP
cars for pure reliability, all cars today are reliable.  You drive
them because you FEAR what your peers think.  At least admit that
much.

Ford sales fall 9 per cent in December, 12 per cent for all of 2007
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
January 03, 2008
DETROIT - Ford Motor Co.'s sales fell nine per cent in December,
ending with a whimper a year that is expected to be the worst for the
auto industry since 1998 as consumers fretted over high gasoline
prices and the economy.
Toyota Motor Corp. is expected to overtake Ford as the No. 2 automaker
by U.S. sales when it released its figures later Thursday. It would be
the first time since 1931 that Ford wasn't second behind General
Motors Corp., according to Ford corporate historian Bob Kreipke.
Ford's car sales plummeted 24 per cent for all of 2007 as some models
like the Ford Mustang aged and a new Ford Taurus sedan was unable to
match the volumes of the older version.
Truck sales were down five per cent for the year. Ford's overall sales
were down 12 per cent for 2007.

Ford has gone through too many model names in the past 15 years, too many
changes in the cars.

Please kill me the day I buy a Honda or Subaru.  I've never owned a foreign
vehicle and have no desire to ever to.

...And Canada isn't "foreign".

I'd bet the purchase of my Titan paid as many or more workers in
the US as the purchase of my Mustang did.

Great comparison - you really proved your point!

My wife was a member of the UAW for over 20 years until they packed up her
plant and shipped their jobs off to another State, Mexico, and Canada. She
could accept the jobs moving to another State (she was offered a job in the
new location), and even Canada (similar wages ect.), but not Mexico.

The company stiffed the workers on severance pay.

She had never owned anything made outside of US/CAN until now - now she owns
a VW.

I thinks the sales drop at Ford pertains to the group, especially
since sales stalwarts like the Mustang are also down.  I still hate
Japmobiles and my car is a 2004 Mach-1.

Sure, the article, fine. But the rant and lecture about buying Japanese
cars? Not so much.

My current stable includes three Fords and a Mercury. And if I want to buy a
Japanese car - or even a Chinese car - that's my business. I'm not the
reason that Ford is no longer No. 2.

Yeah, but that was an OLD troll. Mid-80s stuff, I think.

My previous neighbor used to have a bumper sticker on his car:
Hungry? Out of work? Eat your Japanese car.

Of course, he hadn't bought a new car of ANY origin in decades, but he was a
true patriotic A-muhr-ican - he just wasn't doing anything to improve the
bottom line of any of the Big Three.

Me, I've got a pair of 15-year-olds, only one of which I bought new. But at
least I lease a new Escape every three years. So I get to talk.

Nope. The Escape is more truck. The Taurus X looks like what used to be
called the Freestyle, a crossover (read: Volvo station wagon).

Now I see Ford's bringing up the Flex, which looks stolen from Land Rover.

Jean loves her Escape, and when Ford stops building them, I have no idea
what she'll drive next...

Rich... have you actually looked to see how many "Japanese" cars are
actually built in North America... by North American workers?

I didn't think so....

The Tundra is being assembled at a plant in San Antonio... that's in
Texas... not Japan...And this isn't the only case....

Is Toyota gaining market share? Yes.... But they have become an intrinsic
part of the North American automobile manufacturing  community.

Take a look at any new Ford.... tell me you don't see "Hecho en Mexico" on
anything.... tell me that there aren't parts and pieces made all over the
world.... South America.... Taiwan.... Japan... Europe....

Next time you see a SuperDuty with a "LOBO" badge on it... ask yourself
where that truck was built.... Hint.... think "south"....

Knowing how to "cut and paste" doesn't mean we are up on general
knowledge...

I think that part of the problem might be with Ford's reliably, since they
don't seem to wear out then the only reason to buy a new one is 'cause
you're bored with the old one.  My 20 year old GT is closing on 300,000
miles and it wasn't until this last model change that I was tempted to buy a
new car, I even went so far as to stop by the dealer and perused some of his
inventory.  But then gas prices started to rise and I decided that I just
didn't need the headache of trying to squeeze additional money out of the
household budget for a new car payment along with the extra funds necessary
to cope with the upcoming and inevitable jump in the cost of living.
Besides, my current and paid for Mustang GT already gets around 20 miles per
gallon and still out performs 8 out of 10 vehicles on the road even today.
Interestingly enough Ford is the author of many of its own problems.  For
instance Flex fuel technology has been around for some time now and nobody
has thought to pursue it.  There are even several Ford model cars already on
the road that are Flex fuel capable whose owners don't even know about it.
Automobile sales themselves are cyclic in nature and rise and fall with the
health of the economy and in a war time economy like the one we are in
currently auto sales just fall through the floor.  At one time Ford had a
very respected defense branch (Ford Aerospace) which manufactured all kinds
of Military hardware.  This very profitable (even in peace time) division
was sold to a corporate raider who broke the division apart to pay for the
take over then took the remainder to form what was known as Loral Aerospace.
He then took pieces of that company and sold them in order to finance
another pipe dream known as Globalstar.  Jump forward to today and you can
see we have a war going on, people aren't buying cars, and Ford doesn't have
a defense division to help compensate for the shortfall.  With short sighted
thinking like that it's no wonder they are losing market share.
