SVO 73mm Piston Calipers

Hey guys,

I have been trying to upgrade my brakes on my 1990 GT and I just
recently dropped about $450 on a set of Power Slot rotors, Hawk pads,
and I decided to upgrade to the SVO 73mm piston caliper for a little
better braking.  When I got the parts I of course did not check to see
if the brake pads actually fit the calipers and of course when I got
my old rotors off and the new ones on, I went to put the pads into the
calipers and the damn clips are too small for the 73mm piston.

I then proceeded to curse myself for ordering the wrong pads and then
decided to go to Napa and see if they had the right pads in stock.
They did not and then I reluctantly headed over to AutoZone to see if
they had anything.  I told them I had the calipers from a 1984-86
Mustang SVO and they said they had the right pads and gave them to me
only to find that they are the same as the ones I ordered.  I told the
guy that they are the same calipers on a 82-83 Lincoln Continental as
well as Mark 7 and they came up with the same damn pads that did not
fit.  I have yet to call 50Resto.com to find out if I ordered the
wrong pads or not but I am stumped as to why AutoZone and Napa are
selling the wrong pads for an 84-86 SVO.  Anyone have any insight on
this????

Been there.  I have gotten rid of the car now, so I don't still have
the paperwork, but the pads that fit are in the parts suppliers'
system as for a Corvette.  I forget the year, but I think they're for
a 1970.  I know it doesn't make sense, but that's what fit...  Once
you get the right ones, ask AutoZone or Pep Boys or whoever to print
you a 'pull slip'.  That will have the part number for the next time
you need 'em.

On my 73mm calipers I used Hawk HP+ (not HP-S)

Well I tried to get the HB125F.650 at PepBoys because they carry Hawk
pads and they should be the same size as the HB125N.650 and when I
brought my caliper in they did not fit.  Also, I went to AutoZone to
see the calipers they carried for the SVO and the ones they have look
like they have some sort of bracket inside the piston that is plastic
or something that makes the smaller clips on the pads fit.  Is there
supposed to be one of those on my caliper??? What gives here???

I think I have found your problem.   I happen to have a
set of stock 73mm calipers in my basement.

I measured the inside of the pistons to be about 64mm
ID.  But, there's also a metal donut welded inside the
caliper.  The hole in that is about 40mm.  The clips on
the back of the pads fit inside that 40mm hole.

My guess is that instead of making differant pads for
the SVO calipers, Ford welded in that donut so they
could use standard Mustang pads.  If you don't have
that donut with the smaller hole, then you'll never get
a pad to fit right.

AH-HA!!!  I knew I was missing some part of the caliper!! So I guess I
should just return the calipers I bought from 50Resto.com (who I am
very disappointed in for their lack of info on parts that they sell) I
even told the guy to get out an SVO caliper and check to see if the
pads fit the one he had and he tried to tell me that they did not have
the brake pads in stock to check it...BULL.  I am really surprised too
because I have had good experience with them in the past but it seems
like they don't know much about this particular caliper...I really
appreciate the help boB thanks for checking it out for me!!

So I call the guys at 50resto and they are trying to tell me that I
have to bend the clip on the pads so that it will fit the piston in
the caliper. Is that possible??? They tell me it was the resident Ford
"expert" that told them that....they also mentioned that if I want to
return them they have to look "exactly like they did when I received
them or they will send them back to me! Is that ridiculous or what???

Yes, that's pretty absurd on both counts.  They sold
you the wrong parts.  They should take them back with
no questions asked.

I have been on the phone with 50Resto.com for a half an hour and they
can't seem to figure out why the pads I got don't fit.  The calipers I
have are justa steel piston that has a small rubber piece going around
the edge and there is nothing else there it is just steel.  These guys
are telling me that they sent me the right pads and I am telling them
that when I put the clip into the piston it DOES NOT FIT it just
rattles around in there like it is meant for a 60mm caliper (the stock
GT one).  I have no idea what to do besides return the caliper and get
them from damn auto zone!!! AHHHHH this is so frustrating!!!
