Can anyone give me some info on how to repair the tilt steering on an 89
F-250. It is stuck in the full up position. It wont do anything when I pull
the lever. I can't find any info in the Chilton's manual.
Thanks,
Mike

dont know anyting about this vehicle, but like most tilt steering wheels
the lever probably goes into a hole and the tip is broken off and is not
releasing the wheel??  can you see a pin holding the lever in place.
might need a small punch to remove the pin from lever and then you can
look in hole and check the end of lever to see if the tip is broken off?
how about trying to look up other tilt controls(fords) to see if you can
find anything on them.. ford probrobably used the same design for all of
its vehicles...

I have an 89 F250 and on it I have to push forward on the lever, not pull up.

CSA is correct.  You PUSH on the TS lever, not pull.

Yes, I became aware of my mistake when I read CSA's reply. In my van I have
to pull the lever. I just got them mixed up. The tilt lever is the same
lever used for the turn signals. The lever screws into the steering column.
I just don't know how to get to it. Chilton's manual as I said before is no
help.

Mike,

In my '86 F150, you first remove the two screws in the back side of the
steering wheel and remove the center of the steering wheel.  Disconnect the
horn and cruise control wiring (if equipped).  Remove the steering wheel
retaining nut.  Make a reference mark across the end of the steering shaft
to allow you to put the wheel back on in the same place.  Use a puller to
remove the steering wheel.  Remove the two screws holding the TS switch
mechanism in place.  Also remove the grounding screw.  Remove the steering
column shroud.  Slide all of the steering column wire harness that you can
up the steering column.  The TS switch, with the attachment point for the
lever should slide up out of the column housing.  Now that it is out, you
can see what you are working on.  As others have asked, is the TS lever
broken off?  If so that is a pretty easy fix once you have the TS switch out
of the column far enough to see what you are doing.  If the latch mechanism
in the column that locks the wheel in position is broken, you will probably
have to replace the steering column.  The pivot pins that allow the wheel to
tilt are pressed in.  The springs for the tilt mechanism are substantial.
Be VERY careful if you attempt to repair the column.  Hope this helps.
