I have a '95 ranger 2.3L 2WD. Every time I fill up at the pump there is
a strong gas smell for at least 3 or 4 days after. And lately I've
noticed half of the pumps I go to won't stay on, they instantly click
off. So I sit there and hold the damn thing. And when I fill the tank
to near capacity (I don't dare "top it off") a gas puddle forms under
the tank. It appears to be coming from above the tank. Any ideas? How
soon until I blow up?

Could be the vapor line from the top of the tank to the charcoal filter
element has come off at the tank.happened to my '88 Ranger.

It depends.  Are you a smoker?  It sounds as though the hose between the
filler neck and the tank may be loose or deteriorated.  After checking
that, I would let someone else pump gas while you stick your head under
the truck.  A visual inspection should tell you exactly where the
problem is.
