Mark Schofield - 15 Apr 2005 22:35 GMT Went to Wally's yesterday for my Mobil 5/30 synthetic and motocraft filter. All they had was Fram. Went to the next town down (Brandford CT.), and they had only a few Motocraft filters on the shelf. Any similar experiences. Maby Wally's isn't carryingthe ford filters anymore. Too bad. Mark S.

My understanding is that Ford will not sell to Wally world any more. I heard that they wanted Ford to sell them to them cheaper and Ford said no. Same is true of the Motorcraft oil. Advance, Autozone, and Pep Boys all sell MC filters, but at a higher price. Maybe you have others in your area that may carry them. I would not suggest switching to Fram.

Reece Talley - 16 Apr 2005 16:11 GMT Fram filters have very little if any QC. The total surface area of the media is about half what others are offering. The bypass valves are flimsy and very leaky. The net result is that it stops filtering early on and dumps dirty oil back into the oil pan.

Rudy - 20 Apr 2005 03:53 GMT I put 287,000 KM ~ 190,000 miles on my '93 Lumina 3.1L using pretty well exclusively Fram PH 3387 and PH 3980 filters changed at ~5000 miles. Used any typical " u/$ 1.00 on sale" oil from Walmart, Checker, or wherever. Was running fine and not burning any visible oil when I sold it. No engine work was ever required.
I've also put over 90,000 miles on my '91 Honda GoldWing 1500 M/C using the FRAM PH6017A filter and 90,000+ miles on my '02 Ford F350 7.3 PSD using FRAM. I ve been changing the truck filter and Walmart generic 15W-40 oil at 3000 miles and sending samples to Blackstone Labs for their analysis. Their replies indicate lower than normal impurities and wear. Their only suggestion is to "Put 5000 miles on the oil"..its too clean !
Think I'll stick with Fram.
Regarding the surface area of the media, Not all filter element 'media' is the same grade. Has this been compared ?

Could you define it more clearly, Clay?

Nice web site with no scientific backing to substantiate any of what Russ W. Knize's opinion is on oil filters. The guy is a freaking software engineer http://knizefamily.net/russ/ Just because he says so doesn't make it so.

Check out some of the Ford forums and search for lifter noise on cold start. You will find that the first question asked is what filter are you using? Most reply Fram. After changing to a different brand, amazingly no more lifter noise on cold start. Adding that to oil filter study, plus other web sites stating the same thing, and comments about the quality going down since they were purchased by Allied Signals, reaffirms my opinion on the Fram filters. I won't use them.

No reason for me to weep. I haven't used Fram filters for some time, but I didn't know there was a reason not too. I asked a simple question which in a very brief sentence could have been answered intelligently. I was not given an answer, I was given 1) a link, so I could do the research myself, and 2) an answer of "Ask any racer that question. Because Fram is garbage", which doesn't define anything nor does it give useful information as to where to get it, other than racers, which I don't know of.
All one had to do was say because based on information I have is that they use cheap materials and workmanship, and here's the link to my source.
Clay<<not weeping, I did read though.

Damn You are one picky bastard! You got a link, the research was done for you! Some people are never satisfied, some are incredibly LAZY. Is that you Clay?
All one had to do was say THANK YOU!
Badger - 21 Apr 2005 01:13 GMT I think maybe you need to read the thread from the beginning. I asked a simple question. You guys are awfully touchy, or at least one of you. I made no comment as to whether or not Fram was a good filter. I simply asked why wouldn't someone shouldn't switch. I was curious. I think it's interesting that you'll call me lazy for "not doing the research when all I wanted to know was why he wouldn't switch, but he was too lazy to answer a simple question. Chill dude.

When you flip someone off, do you seriously expect them to reply to you nicely? "Read it and weep!" was a direct response to you off base little accusation. **You gotta love when people have an opinion they can't define. **
Chill dude? Nobody called you lazy, I simply asked you if you were lazy, I also asked you if you were one of those people who are "never satisfied"... If the shoe fits wear it. THE DAMN "RESEARCH" WAS DONE FOR YOU, the link was provided. All you had to do was look. You chose to bitch. You need to take the chill pill.

I did read it again, and I stand by what I originally said. I'm not the one getting upset, guy. I was having a dialog about the way people responded to a simple question. The initial response I got from my simple question, in my opinion was weak. That was the entire comment. Any way I'm done with this thread as it's going no where.
I think it's ironic that this thread dragged out about a discussion of how posts should or shouldn't be done.

Mark Schofield - 16 Apr 2005 23:23 GMT I had bad luck with Fram filters for a 97 Ranger 4l V6. Cold weather startups, a ticking from the top end/valve train - like lifters. Would last for about 1 minute till the oil worked its way up. Switched to Motocraft and the noise disappeared. Using the sane oil - Valvoline 5?30. Tried a NAPA filter, no noise. Tried a Fram again and the noise returned. So no more Frams for me. I've seen postings in some of the Ranger forums which say the same thing about the standard Fram filter. Went to Advanced Auto for the Motocraft.

Joe - 16 Apr 2005 04:14 GMT I wondered about that. They have only had a few each time I've looked for them for a long time now. I use FL1A's religeously (on anything they'll fit), and I usually get them at Walmart.

You can't find anything in those huge buildings without a map. Huge stock of clothing and garbage made overseas with so few items made in America, I finally just said no to walmart.
ugh - 27 Apr 2005 02:05 GMT Okay, got my new Wix oil filter, $6.99, but I want to know if the Mobile 1 5W 30 is okay. Are any "tests" indicating that I should use another oil in my '99 Expedition?
