1990 E-150 E4OD Question

As the subject line says, I have a 1990 E-150 van with the towing package, a
351FI, and an E4OD transmission.  By what means are the shift points
determined?  Does this transmission use a VSS on the speedometer output?
The van today was staying in 1st gear too long before shifting, requiring me
to shift it to 2 manually.

Also the ABS light is on for the rear ABS system.  I had assumed that the
sensor for that was on the rear axle, but could the two problems be related?

Thanks,

CJB

Oh, I should mention that I think the Neutral Switch, or whatever that thing
is called now, is bad because it leaves the backup lights burning.  I
recently had to take them out and haven't replaced the switch yet.  If
that's not what sets the backup lights, I'm interested in how to fix that
too.

Thanks,

CJB

there is an updated NSS, or MLPS Manual Lever Position Switch in Ford-ese

wiring connector needs to be changed, instructions come with new switch

hint:  leave the old shell on the wires, just slide it up the wires, till
you're sure you have it right

then crush the old shell with Channel-Locks and remove it

Do I have to get the MLPS from Ford, or can I get it aftermarket?  I checked
price at my favorite parts supplier and I know they can get it.  I just need
to know if the Ford unit is that much better.

Thanks for your replies!

bingo!

both ABS and VSS use the sensor in the differential

change it and get on with life

So there's no VSS at the transmission?

Ok.  After looking at the van today, there indeed is a VSS at the
Speedometer Cable output at the Transmission, and another one on the
differential.

Hmmm...

replace the one at the transmission, should fix the shift problem

Ok, I replaced the VSS at the transmission.  Since the shift issue only
occurred one day and went away on its own, I can't tell a difference.  I 'm
sure that took care of it though.

As I mentioned before, I also have a ABS light on that I'd hoped would go
away if I replaced the VSS.  When the front VSS didn't make a change in the
light, I also replaced the one in the differential.  Unfortunately, the
light is still on...

Any suggestions about the VSS?

Thanks,

I think this should be a new thread.
