2000 Ranger Cold Start Issue

I have a 2000 Ford Ranger 4x4, V6, 4.0L and just started having a cold start
issue. When I start it up first time of the day (whether its cold or warm
outside), I noticed it almost dying (RPM got real low then came back up and
it was fine--no more problems starting it). It has done that a few days, and
today I started it and the engine stopped. I had to crank it three times and
it started on the third crank (all short cranks--3 seconds or less). It seems
like something is getting worse and causing the engine to either not get
enough air or fuel??? Has anyone else had this problem. The truck has 80000
miles on it. Fortunately, it's still under a six year warranty from Ford, but
I'd like to know if anyone else has experienced this difficulty. Haven't had
any other real issues. Thanks.

Assuming that your air cleaner is clear, I would look at the fuel pump.

Could be an IAC valve problem. Have had this 4 times on a 4.0 Explorer. Pull
it off and clean it. I do this now with every air filter change.

Hey, I appreciate that info. By the way, I had the air cleaner changed when I
stopped by the Ford place for an oil change a couple of weeks ago. The air
cleaner was fairly dirty. I just got the book out and see where the IAC valve
is. Do you just clean with solvent?

Thanks.
