Hello,
I’m a DIY person.  The airbag light is on in my 2001 Ford Escape.
What do I do?  Can I fix this?  Maybe a plug is loose or something?
Do these things fail often?

Same problem here, Mechanic @ dealership mentioned that sometimes it's the
seat belts slack or under seats connectors that need to be justled.
That was my problem, after vaccuming the light would come on. Good luck

DIY yourself down to the dealer and have it checked out.  And quit being a
cheapskate.

You can start by counting the flashes

(which is the secret code, don't tell anybody !!!!)

my 94 F-150 flashes. The best way I found to fix the problem was place a
piece of black tape over the bulb. First I tried to remove the bulb but then
it started beeping the codes and the beeper was so far up under the dash I
could not find it to unplug it. So now I am good to go untill the bulb
blows.

Im not worried because its built ford tuff. If I must hit somthing I will
have to make sure its one of those chopped up low riders that keeps getting
stuck on speed bumps etc :)

Not looking very good for the ford. But the ford also has much more impact
force then the mini. What would the scene look like if the ford hit the mini
head on. Im thinking better for the ford  But in the pics I cant see how the
air bag would have made any difference. So my choice would be to pick the
mini if I was going to hit a wall. But pick the ford if I was going to hit a
mini. I think the ford would have a much better chance of being able to
drive it home.

I don't know how the Ford would do in a head-on with a smaller vehicle.
But probably better than against a large veh for sure.  Chev and
Toyota PUs have much better crash-worthiness than the Ford F-150, at
least until 2003 ("my" year).  In 2004 they did much better.

You've probably heard the saying, "It's not the fall that kills you -
it's the sudden stop."  Seat belts and airbags slow down that very
sudden stop.  Without them you're smacked against the steering wheel or
windshield and stop there pretty quickly (think of all those flies and
mosquitos hitting the windshield).  Your restraint system allows you to
slow more gradually from 60 mph to 0 - like in maybe 200 milliseconds
instead of 10.  It's like dropping an egg onto the floor so it lands on
a pillow or sponge instead of directly onto the ceramic - the padding
gives it more time to slow down so it doesn't break.  Air bags work.

I cant argue there. any restraints are better then none. But the best
protection is dont crash in the first place. But I found out the hard way
thats not allways posible. You can do every thing just right and some stupid
SOB will still hit you.

Kinda changing the subject here. But I feel like they need to base peoples
driving records on how many accidents they cause instead of minor speeding
like 10 miles over. Ive seen people driving under the speed limit and crash.
They were sober and the weather was nice. Just not watching what they were
doing.

I was out a few weeks ago and got behind two yong couples that were playing
with each other, kissing and etc while the car was swerving all over the
road. Get people like that to get their act together or get them off the
roads. Then the rest of us would be much safer and would be less worried
about how safe their ride will hold up in a crash.

Traderjoe,
Your issue with the air bag should only be looked at by a QUALIFIED
technician. If you do something wrong you can inadvertantly deploy your
airbag and at $700 a pop, you dont want to do that. Take it to the dealer
and let them figure out what is wrong with it. BUT, if you must look at it
yourself remember one thing. DISCONNECT THE BATTERY. If you unplug anything
having to do with your air bag while the battery is connected, it acts like
the deploy switch is activated and hence the airbag will deploy. Just be
really careful when working around the airbag.
