When I was in school in a large nonsouthern city, there were major fights in my school EVERYDAY! I know some teachers here in the south and they tell me there are almost NEVER any major fights in their schools. If southern guys are tough, where did they get to be tough? - not at school! Maybe they've avoided confrontation because they're much more mature than you - or maybe they just have some manners... I agree with some of what you say. You live in Colorado and that is a powerful long way from Dixie, we would like to keep it that way. I don't think a map is used to denote too many places in US- if Michigan can be considered part of the Midwest (which it is), my guess is anything west of the Mississippi is considered "the" West.
