Recently I noticed that my Ranger idles somewhat fast when it is cold
(1,300-1,400 RPM).  After the engine warms up the idle goes back to normal
(800 RPM).

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this?

Um yeah, its called a PCM or powertrain control module. Every vehicle has
one, and when the engine is cold it goes to a cold start mode, and has a
high idle till the engine reaches a certain temp.  Ir is very normal...
Expect to see it if the temp is below 40 deg F the first time you start it.
If it does it on warm days, then you need to have the comp checked out.
