Hi everyone, I recently purchased a 2000 Ford Ranger w/ X-cab. My
question is does anyone know if it is safe and/or legal to put a
child-seat, for a toddler, in either the front or the cab? My quess is
that it probally wouldn't work to put him in the cab because the seats
are very small and they face eachother, which would mean he would be
sitting sideways, which is dangereous in case of side impact. I had an
idea to build an extended seat/platform out of plywood to make more
space at the base, but that still wouldn't solve the sideways problem.
My other idea is to put him up front and push the seat back to make
space for the carseat, Im just not sure if its legal in Mass. I plan on

doing some further research into this matter, but if anyone out there
has any suggestions and/ or personal experiences they would like to
share, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks J/Boston

Where else would you put the child seat? I am sure your truck has a
passenger side air bag deactivation switch, exactly for this reasons.
Installing a child seat in a Ranger is extensively covered in the Owner's
Guide. If you don't have one, go to
http://www.genuineservice.com/genuineservice/en/GB?page=E4 and download one.
If your child seat has a tether, you will need to get the FREE anchor kit
from your Ford Dealer (it is covered in the Owner's Guide).

Don't know the local laws there, but I used to design seat belt
systems. You do not want him facing sideways, only frontwards for a
toddler. I suggest you put him in the front middle seat if possible.
You do not want to put him in a seat with an active air bag - air bags
can kill a kid in a car seat!
In my '99 F150, I have forward facing rear seats. Ford had a free
safety strap that anchored the seat to the wall behind the seat.
A good Ford dealer might offer you some free advice on this. Also may
police offer free child car seat advice now.
