I have a 95 f-150 XLT subercab with auto hubs (dashboard activated). I want
to check one of the front bearings while I'm doing the brakes (I'll probably
also cut the rotors). Directly inside the chrome 3-screw (T25) hub is a
cast (magnesium?) part that I have no idea how to get off. I tried pulling
and with reasonable force turning of. I don't want to destroy anything. I
was expecting to find a large hex nut.
Any Ideas or suggestions? TIA
Rob
Rob,
After you take off the chrome cap you will find a snap ring holding the hub
in (magnesium looking thing). Use a 90 degree pick and pull the snap ring
out. It can be a real pain in the a** your first time. Once you get the
snap ring out (I'm calling it a snap ring, it's really a round spring clip)
you can pull the hub out. After the hub is out you will find another clip
around the axle. If memory serves you need a special socket to remove the
lock nut and adjuster nut. There are a few different sockets used depending
on the model year / axle type.
hope this helps,
John

This is the right procedure. Original poster, you won't be taking this off
without the special tool. A hub wrench or spanner or whatever you want to
call it.

there should be a snap ring holding it in
