Ford Escape ABS and Brake light on..?

Hi everyone, I have a 2002 Ford Escape, V6, 4x4.

I recently had new calipers, rotors and pads installed. A few days
afterwards, the ABS light came up, and then, the brake light came
on..!

I took it into the garage, they looked everything over, and said the
brakes were in good working order, but I needed a new sensor for the
ABS. I asked them about the brake light being on, and they said it
might be due to the ABS problem.

They said it should be safe to drive it until the sensor comes in.
I've been driving it around with the brake light on.. being wary the
whole time. What are your thoughts .. is this normal? Should the ABS
and Brake light be on? Oddly enough, the SUV stops BETTER than it
ever has.

I appreciate all your help. I really can't afford to take this
vehicle to the dealer for advice. :(

And of further note.. the fluid level looks good, and everything seems
to be in order, as best as my novice eyes can see.

Check that the emergency brake isn't up a notch- that'll trigger the light.
It's possible the e-brake is adjusted too tight- had that happen on my Probe
and it caused the light to stay on. Pull the brake handle all the way up,
then back down and see if it goes off. About all I got on this one. . .

Thanks Tom. I use the handbrake everyday, it's a habit I carried over
from my Manual transmission mustang. When I take the SUV out, I take
the handbrake off and the light comes out, then after a bit the brake
light comes on, although sometimes it comes on right away.

Well sounds like the shop that did the brakes should pay for that sensor..
It aint just a coincidence that they did your brakes (rotors) and then all
of a sudden the sensor goes bad!! I bet they screwed up the tone ring in the
rotor when they installed it.

NOPE, the red brakelight might cause the ABS light to come on, but not the
other way around. Something in your base brake system has a problem. I bet
its the float in the master cylinder. Disconnect the plug on the resevoir
(plastic part) of the master cylinder (M/C) and see if the brake like comes
on again. If it doesnt, you need to replace that sensor, its stuck from when
they did the brake job.

Like I said earlier, its ODD that you would take it in to get brakes done
and then all of a sudden more problems pop up. I wouldnt take it back to
them. There is a chance they caused the problems on purpose to get you pay
for more stuff.. Its sad, but stuff like that does happen.

I would INSIST that they pay for the sensor, or atleast the labor to put it
in, since it was fine before the brake job and now its gone bad right after
they worked on your truck.

You will have to suck up the money on the red brake light, but I think that
it's the sensor in the M/C.

Thank you very much Ford Tech. I appreciate your advice.. I'll take a
look at it and follow up on the garage... they're "BBB" approved.. I
hope they stand by their work.
