I replaced a leaking valve cover gasket and I also intend to replace the
pushrod cover gasket.  (300cid/6cyl)  Over the life of this engine(27yr)
a build-up of oil/grime/junk has accumulated.  I used to pressure wash
it occasionally, but.....I slacked off some.  Any recommendations for a
strong degreaser that will loosen/melt this gunk?  I have a pressure
washer/1700psi...cold water only.  A steamer would be good, but, no got!
BTW:  valve train is black, but not a hint of sludge/junk.  Thanks

I would not use 1700psi to clean an engine, even on the outside.  There
is too much chance of blowing something loose or forcing water inside a
part, connector etc which will corrode.  I have been using a product
called Super Clean which comes in a standard spray bottle and works
really well.  Then wash off with low pressure water.

FLOW-AWAY from Kano Labs works very well.  If you are careful you can
use kerosene.

I'll look for F-W.  Kerosene...back in the day, I used that all the
time, but I think I've had enough of that odor now...lol  Paint thinner
is pretty-much the same formula, but then again the odor
'lingers'...thanks

Is that a product from Castrol?  If so, I used to use that and it's very
good, but I can't find it anymore.....thanks

Actually its available at Wal-Mart (look in automotive around the other
degreasers) for about $5 a gallon in the concentrated form. I use it to
clean the grease out of my clothes after I have been working on a vehicle
around the house.. It works GREAT.. Especially if you let it sit a while..

The purple degreaser that can be found under various names at most auto
parts stores isn't too bad.  Spray it on full strength and let it sit a
while.  Caution: don't do it over any surface (i.e. that new concrete
driveway) you don't want to mess up..

I found a spray by Autocrafters for $1/can. Bought one whole
can.....Gunk brand was $3....and followed the instuctions.  Hosed the
engine down after the waiting period and VOILA!  All the nasty gone!  I
was/still am amazed!  I'll buy anothe can!!

The Gunk brand was expensive to begin with, but what puzzled me was the
method used.  The stuff was a gel and the engine had to be stone-cold.
That's as far as I got reading the instructions.  I'm sure it's good,
but my dollar was well spent.

As an added bonus, the off-fall cleaned my driveway too!  What great
stuff!  lol
