96 F250 5.4 with dual tanks. The forward tank sending unit has
evidently failed. It does not read fuel level at all.

Also, when running on the rear tank, the fuel leaches into the front
tank. I can run the front tank dry, flip the switch, and after 25-50
miles, flip back top the front and run for a while.

I plan on keeping the truck for a couple more years, and would like to
fix the problem.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
MGP

The fuel is not "leaching" into the front tank. What is happening is,
when you are switched to the back tank, the return line valve is not
closing off completely on the front tank return port. Replacing the
defective electric switch over valve may solve both problems. It did
for me on an older model!!

Sounds like the solution. The fuel indication problem was intermitent
at first but is now constant. The amount of fuel returning to the
forward tank seems to have increased since the problem first appeared.
SO perhaps the valve has failed entirely now.

Please tell me the valve is not IN the tank  :(

Mine was mounted inside the frame near the front tank.  Be sure you
mark all the pipes/hoses well and get them back on the same port on
the new valve!!

The valve is located inside the frame near the front tank. It has 6
ports, so if you tackle the job yourself, make sure you mark all the
parts well, so you get it put back together correctly!!

I located a device mounted to the frame with only two lines going into
it. It is obviously fuel system related and has an electrical
connecter. Could this be a newer design with less outlets?
I could NOT find anything in the fuel run with multiple connecting
lines.

Thanks for your help,

No, that's a fuel pump.

I thought that might be the pump. So I am assuming the failed valve is
in the tank then, unlike Tom's on his older vehicle.
