Can I put a points distributor from an earlier model ('70s) into a
newer model 460 that had a different ignition system (i.e. magnetic/
tfi) ??

Sure.  But upgrade it to a breakerless system.

Why would you want to? The magnetic pick up is far superior to points.

I think the OP found a used one for $70 in another thread.

Yes, but there is nothing wrong with the one already in the engine.  I think
he's just unfamiliar with anything other than a points dist.

Seems to me it would be much easier to learn how to plug in a few wires into
a controller than it would be to swap a whole distributor.

I have a 351C that I am going the electronic route.  If I
had the distributor,, I would spend the 70 bucks on the
ignition box and a salvage yard harness to go with the
distributor he has.  If you can get the plug and wire stubs,
you can easily make a harness.  These days, points should
only be used to keep it running until an electronic setup
can be installed.

Yeah, as David previously said, it was a money thing, and what CJB
said with the overfamiliarity with points .  I have already spent
about 1200 on the engine swap and am about out of money my wife will
let me spend... lol   I am going to go Davids original route with an
MSD box.  This decision is based on the overwhelming responses saying
that the mp is far superior to the points setup.

Good move. You won't regret the electronic setup.

David and CJB both have me pegged.  For one the money issue (msd box
was 140 new and the points dist was 70).  I have already spent 1200 or
so on the engine swap and am almost out of the money from my paychecks
that my wife is allowing me to use(yeah no bull).  The other issue is
of course the familiarity with the points distibutor and the lack
therof with anything else.  The wiring harnesses are all cut and there
are only wires coming from the dist. but another source told me that
it shouldnt matter, and the MSD ignition will tell me how to wire it
anyhow.  The information that I looked at online courtesy of David and
msd even has the color of the wires listed that are coming out of my
distributor (black/violet and black/orange)  So because of all the
overwhelming statements (and courting my wife for more allowance)
praising ei over points, I am going to go with what David originally
said.  MSD.  Thank you all for the information.  I was just
intimidated about what I didnt know about, and didnt want to start
digging a money pit.

I have had an MSD 6A on my Torino with a later Duraspark (magnetic
trigger) distributor for 10 years with zero difficulties with it.
