While waiting for the dealer to get the parts to do the cruise control
recall (he had stated that the chances of my cruise control working after
the fix were slim to none - it was not working at the time) I had occasion
to replace the master cylinder.
I am assuming the switch mentioned in the recall is on the bottom of the
cylinder towards the front. I say that because I noticed that the wires
coming out of the switch, were lying against some support bracket for
something or other. The insulation around the wire was obviously from
bumping the metal and I could see wire. Now, I'm thinking him...switches
and wires and shorts are not good under the hood so - while I was in there,
I cut the wire, stripped the insulation and re-connected them with the
electricians twist, wrapping all with tape and rerouting the wire so it did
not rub against anything.
My cruise control now works. This is a quick check and from looking at the
harness and I can see that all E-150's might have this problem.
It also makes me wonder if 12V goes through that switch and what potential
for a fire it might have had.

The potential for a fire was there. Most likely what was happening
was the bare wire touching the bracket was effectively telling the
cruise control that you had your foot on the brake which kept it from
engaging.

that's what I thought. I was wondering if 'THAT' my be the REAL recall
problem instead of the switch????

The recall is for the switch. But the fix would address your problem as
well.

No the real problem is the switch starts leaking fluid and provides a path
to ground,
the resistance creates heat and the fluid and wiring catches on fire.
Thats not to say you haven't found a secondary issue that needs addressing,
but yours is the first post I have seen on what you found.

Get the switch replaced. The switch costs less then $10.00
That's a lot cheaper than replacing your home after it burned down.
