Of course they're going to tell you that they need to do it. It's a
matter of liability. If you do it yourself, and then you die in a
collision, they don't want your heirs to sue them... "Hey, they should
have told Paul that he shouldn't do it himself". I would venture to
guess that it's not that difficult, but, hey, I don't want to get sued by
your heirs either, so I won't say for sure.

Why don't you just use the seatbelt? It is designed to prevent you from
flying through the windshield, or from flying out of the truck during a
side impact or rollover. The air bag won't prevent that, even if it went
off.

On my 03 Expedition I was able to turn the seatbelt warning sound off by
doing a certain key on/off combination. Check your owners manual... Should
be in there.
