I have a 1986 F150 XLT Lariat 4X4 extended Cab with a EFI 302. The
fuel pump has been making noise for a few months, but the other day it
just stopped working. It felt like I ran out of gas, but I had plenty.
I baught a new pump and installed it, but it didn't work either. I
used a multi meter to determine that even with the key on I still had
no porwer to the pump.
I can get the pump to work with a hot wire, so I know it's not under
the truck. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what component could
have failed to make this happen.
Thanks

there is a fuel cut-off switch that could have tripped - safety feature

Is there a fuse in the fuse panel for the fuel pump? A friend has a
Ford and there is a fuse for the pump. YMMV. Pull it out and the
engine stops...

There is a relay that provides power to the fuel pump. There also should
be a fuse protecting it as well.

I checked all the fuses under the dash. Is there another place that
this fuel pump fuse sould be. The power that goes to the relay is out
as well, so I figured it was between the battery and the relay.

Check under the hood. There should be fuses along with the relays there. Try
swapping the relay with another of the same type just to make sure the fuel
pump relay is good.

There might be some "fusable links" between the battery and the fuse box.
Personally I've never been able to identify them by looking at them so a
manual might be needed. I'd start checking backwards from the relay to the
battery until I found out where there is no power. It seems like something
else would not be working too though.

If you can't get the pump to work with a hot wire, then the new pump has to
be toast.
