OK guys and girls, I have a problem with my 2001 Ford F150 4.2 V6 .
Let me give you the history, and lets see what you think. My truck sat
for almost a year because i was away.It was started weekly and driven
1 to 3 times a month,short and long trips.It devolped a random skip,or
mis-fire.I did’nt matter what the weather was or the temp.I ran some
injector cleaner through it for a while, replaced the fuel filter and
after several months the problem was gone.my check engine light was on
I took it to autozone and had the codes read it was a p401 code
insuff. EGR flow.I took off the egr valve cleaned it, made sure the
pinstel whould operate. After i cleaned the EGR I took it back and the
p401 code was gone but i developed new ones. Now i have P171 lean
missfire bank 1 cyl 1 p301 p303.Ok sorry let me go back just a bit,it
ran fine for about 6 months then 1 day i started it up and itran
poorly since. I replaced the DPFE sensor, plugs, wires, and the 02 sensor
for bank 1.Somtimes when I start it i smell fuel, coming out of the
exhaust. My check engine light flashes when i’m under a load, telling me
i have a mis-fire this has destroyed my cat. on that side again i have
been running injector cleaner through it, and it has been getting
better. The light only flashes once and a while.I have looked for
vaccuum leak by spraying carb. cleaner and prophane. around the
intake, engine area,I have cleaned the mass air flow sensor with the
right cleaner. Please help,if anyone has some of these similar
symptoms Let me know,I should take it to a real mech. but i just do’nt
have the cash.

It's P0301 and P0303. Those two codes indicate a misfire in the #1 and #3
cylinders.

Given the kind of lack of use that you report, I'd suggest fouled plugs.

PS
Codes are five digits ...

Put a 20 oz. bottle of techron in the tank. That will clean the intake,
valves and carbon that collects in the valve body when running el-cheapo
gas that has no additives................a bottle of techron every 6
months if you are always buying the cheapest gas you can find, it is a
neccessity.

Thanx For your reply Ricky, I have been using injector cleaner in the
tank, i have found the best prouducts in my case has been
seafoam, which i add to the gas and just a little bit to the oil, also
the Lucas product ,the small bottle.Maybe i’m impatient, how long do
you think it takes these products to work?Is too much injector cleaner
no good?of all the playing around, i’ve done to find out what is
wrong, nothing has automaticlly fixed it.But it seems to me.the
injector cleaner has made a difference,Its taken awhile,i was leaning
to a intake manifold gasket leak,or a bad or dirty injector,my fuel
regulator,or maybe some sort of sensor, that i was’nt aware of what it
controlled. But the cyls that mis -fire are not right next to each
other, alltough they are on the same bank,so i’ve kind of ruled out
Gaskets, and maybe a crack in the coil pack, do you think a o2 sensor
on the oppisite bank could cause this? Back when i was working on cars
they had points and a carb, so i’m kinda lost when it comes to this
high tech stuff. Also i took my dial tire gage and put it on my
schrader valve for my fuel rail and that seemed ok also.So i’m a
dinosaur as far as this is concerned, would a faulty or plugged
injector, cause me all this grief, after all this injector cleaner? And
yes i use the cheapest fuel possible, and now i have 130000 miles on
it, It went from 20+ mpg to 10 now back up to 14 just recently. Thanx
,so any insight you have or anyone else, would be greatly welcomed!
