Hello... I'm thinking of converting a 1996 F-150 from 2X4 to 4X4. I
want to use the components from my 1987 F-150 to do it. My service
manual set is for model years 1987 thru 1996, so I am hoping that no
changes were made in the frames in those years, and I can just
exchange whatever I need to for this conversion and junk the rest.
Will appreciate any info for this...
Thanks!

You would be better off selling both trucks and buying what you want.

dont do it. I know a guy that did and it was insanely time consuming,
ft crossmembers have to be changed and lots more. KB

It would be cheaper to sell the '96 and the donor parts from the '87 and buy
a new truck that already has 4WD.
I'm not sure, but I think there are significant changes between the '87 and
the '96.

The electrical system, harness, EEC unit, and PCM unit are all
different between a 2WD and 4WD truck...
That, plus the frame and suspension modifications and changes required
put the labor plus parts costs out of bounds for most of us...
I recommend simply purchasing a 4WD truck, like from Craigslist
offerings, or, country areas (I travel about 35 miles away from large
cities) where I am seeing, farmers selling F-150 trucks that run great
and look fine, starting at $900 and up to about $2500, for 1990 to 2000
year models!
