Engine misses after rainy night

Peter W Crisler - 20 Dec 2008 03:52 GMT 2000 F250 SD, 53,000 miles, standard cab, 8' bed, 6.8L V10, automatic tranny. I bought it new, June, 2000. Problem started early in 2008. I don't have a garage, so the truck is parked outside. After a rainy night, truck starts, but immediately it runs on maybe 5 cylinders. Let it run to warm up and dry out for 20 minutes and the missing never stops. It's worse under load. First time it happened, I drove it 9 miles to work and 9 hours later drove it home. On the way I bought a bottle of ISO HEET and poured it in the tank Let it set overnight. Problem went away until the next rainy night. I have a good sealing gas cap, so I don't think water is getting into the fuel that way. I still feel like it's an electrical problem, but the engine is dry and I've checked all the wiring I can and don't see any things wrong. Anybody got any ideas or solutions?.

Next time it's damp/rainy, pop the hood before you start it. I'll bet you'll see arcing from some ignition components. IF you can't see it, mist over the engine with water from a spray bottle (like an old windex bottle or something)
If it's not that, it might be something on the low voltage side grounding out when wet, which will be harder to isolate.

I didn't see any obvious arcing. With my luck, it's your idea about the low voltage grounding out and being harder to find. Thanks for your ideas.

Guessing... a cracked distributor cap?

I was thinking along the same lines, but perhaps a cracked coil pack housing instead.

My guess would be bad coil/plug boots allowing water into coils/plugs.

Replaced that wire, the ticking and the missing went away. It is a 2000 with 40,000 miles. I replaced the rest of the wires while I was at it. Has not missed since - wet or dry.

My wife drives home and explains that her Seville has a "Service Electrical System" message in the Information Center. Oh $%@&%#, there goes another $500. She said that she went through a car wash and noticed it after that. She also said the traction control would not go on. I took it out - it needed gas. Pressed the "Reset Indicator" button - message went away - never came back. Another lucky stroke.

Ricky Forrest - 21 Dec 2008 18:43 GMT Water leaking from heater hose onto spark plug cap? Plug wires corroded at connection to spark plug? (COP) Coil on plug connector (wire inside the boot that connects to COP is only 3.99 at autozone)corroded?
I never looked at a V10 spark plug setup.
