I bought the positive cable for my Explorer at Auto Zone--they had it in
stock. It looked like it would be very difficult to replace but once you
remove both ends and follow the old path with the new cable it wasn't all
that difficult. You just have to be careful about what it's against and not
against and have come cable ties ready.
My only real objection to the after-market cable was that it has a
copper/bonze terminal and it corrodes more easily but a lot of Vaseline
seemed to take care of that. At about 1/5 the price of the Ford OEM it's
worth the little bit of trouble.

was confused until I re-read my post. cable is the one that goes
between the starter solenoid and the starter, not the ground. not sure
if it has standard ends on it, but what you said will be my second
plan if the replacemetn cable is overpriced. to know that I need a
part number for it so I need an illustrated parts diagram for a 89 F150

No you don't. Take the cable off and take it to the auto parts store.
They'll give you something close.

How long is the cable? IIRC the starter solenoid is mounted on the starter
itself. I think you are talking about the starter switch (commonly and
mistakenly called the solenoid) that is mounted on the fender or firewall
between the pos battery terminal and the starter terminal. If this is the
case, follow the excellent advice of the above poster and simply take the
offending cable to your parts store and get a replacement.....A voltage drop
test would have shown you that the problem was not the battery but increased
resistance in the circuit indicating bad connections or bad cables....Good
luck...
