99 Taurus Tranny Problem

My 99 Taurus SE automatic 3L has developed an odd, intermittent tranny
problem.  It stays in 1st gear often until the tach hits 4k or 5k.
Then it lurches into second.  The speedometer locks at zero, and the
Service Engine light comes on.  Then, after a few clicks or miles,
everything will suddenly return to almost normal (still seems to have
a little trouble downshifting on hills, although this might be my
imagination).  The problem sometimes happens when the car is cold,
sometimes when it's hot.  Sometimes, it'll happen when I've stopped
for a traffic light.  Some days are problem-free.

I took the Taurus to a trusted mechanic, who used a scanner to read
the error code and -- you guessed it -- determined the problem to be a
faulty Vehicle Speed Sensor.  He replaced it with a brand new unit.
The next day, however, the problem recurred.  The mechanic suspects a
sticky solenoid is contributing to the problem, but he said the only
real solution was to replace the entire tranny for $3,000+ which I
don't have.  He added that a short-term fix would be to replace the
valve body for around $1,500 (which I also don't have), but he said
his experience with Tauruses was that another piece, such as the
torque converter, would likely fail soon and I'd wind up paying for a
rebuilt tranny anyway.  I've put the thing up for sale, recommending
it for mechanics only, but haven't had a single nibble.

Does the mechanic's advice sound solid, or should I have the dealer
look at it?  Dealer wants $133/hour, so I'm not taking this decision
lightly.

Advice/opinions appreciated.

Doesn't sound like the transmission. Sounds like the computer does not know
how fast the vehicle is traveling. Could be a intermittent connection. One
of the most difficult problems to pinpoint. Check wiring to the speed
sensor.

First, you don't need a trusted general mechanic, you need a trannie
expert. At a good independent shop. And you will probably have to pay to
get a good idea of what's going on. It sounds like your speed sensor
wiring is somehow corrupted. Most new car dealers don't rebuild them on
site, they just change them out.

Someone who knows what there doing can use a device like a shaffer
shifter to bypass the computer and shift the trannie manually. They can
verify then if its a computer issue or a trannie issue.

Thanks for the replies.

I'll see if I can find a tranny shop in my area.  However, when I
drove it today, the problem seemed to have gotten worse.  I barely got
the car up a hill (was going about 10mph with the pedal almost to the
floor.

I had a 99 Ford Taurus and it finally played out after 3 transmissions and
150,000 miles.
From what I have been told, the taurus tranny from 99 has problems.  My
first transmission was just a little out of warrenty and Ford replaced it
automatically, no charge except for labor, because it was just a fluke that
should nto have happened.  The other two times it went out but it was way
out of warranty.  I loved my taurus and it was like cutting an arm off when
I had to let it go.  I'm now driving a Chrysler.

Good luck!

Your symptoms sound very much like a problem I had a while back.  The fix
was the transmission range sensor.  Not expensive at all.
