1. Loud whining sound coming from one of the wheel areas once car has been
driven for a while.  Sound goes away when brake is applied.  When stopped I
can feel a large amount of heat coming from wheel area and a slight smell.

2. Loud hydraulic sound when turning car to the left.  Doesn't happen when
turning to the right.

Does anyone have a suspicion as to what the issues might be here?  Thanks in
advance for your help!

Dragging brake - on discs a stuck caliper piston or floating caliper
slide pins, on drums a messed up self-adjuster that's over-adjusting,
broken return springs...  It's "Pull the wheel and take a look" time.

You'd need someone to look and listen while driving, but sounds like
internal problems in the steering box.  If it's high mileage, it may
be due for a rebuild.

I disagree with the previous post - you have a bad wheel bearing/hub.

They usually make a lot of noise for a while before generating a lot of
heat.  Get it changed quickly.  The brakes may be dragging due to the
failed hub.

Yeah, that's also possible - the "stops making noise when I hit the
brakes" statement can go either way.

When you "pull the wheel and look", and then try spinning the hub,
if it has lumpy wheel bearings they should show themselves.

In other words:  When in doubt, diagnose a bit deeper.
