Hi

Does anybody know whether this radio is  standard  or  premium model ?

Part number: F3VF-19B165-CB

pictures:

I bought this radio to my 91 Town Car but  the sound is extremely bad.
I recorded an audio sample , the radio was set to the highest volume,
check this out:
http://dl3.ohshare.com/d/6568523/1162072461/1radio.mp3

Speaker connections must be OK because balance and fader works
correctly!!

The speakers themself are OK too, because they play fine with the other
radio (different brand).

I also tested Ford radio in the other car and the sound was poor too.

The only idea i have for now is that the radio is shot  or  its a
premium model which would need an external amplifier to play.

it was sold as a standard model,  but maybe its not , i dont know.

appreciatethe the responses. Regards, Tom.

Looks like a Premium to me..

Thanks for an imput.
I was also searching ebay for similar radios, but it seems like each of
them has its own part number,  hard to figure out the exact model.

My Town Car had a Premium sound system from factory,  but one of the
previous owners removed the amp from the trunk and the premium radio
unit,     and installed some aftermarket radio.
I wanted to restore it to factory look, thats why bought that
Ford-Lincoln cassette player  but i didn't want to install an external
amplifier  because all the speaker cables are already connected and
they work with an aftermarket radio.

I don't know maybe i should measure the voltage of the speaker output
to find out.
If it is Premium and requires an amp,  can i buy some aftermarket amp??
I guess it should be rather low power amplifier because the speakers
are stock.    Strange thing is that they are 63ohms each,   pretty much
for a speaker.

What!  SIXTY THREE?!!

Should look like almost a  dead short on an ohmmeter.  Impedance reads
higher than resistance on an inductor

Been a long time but the rule for amp inputs used to be 'more than 10X'
source output impedance, and that would fit.

yes 63 ohms, each of four speakers.  I got these readouts at the
speaker plug (which connects to the radio).
So there is also resistance of a shielded speaker cable which goes to
the trunk, and then it connects to the speaker wires.
I should have measured directly , at the speaker..  i'll do it
tomorrow.

I also checked for the shortage to the ground or speaker to speaker,
but all the speaker wires are separated,  no shortages.

My ohmmeter must be OK, because in the other car i measured 4.5 ohm for
each speaker, which is standard.

As i wrote those 63ohms Lincoln speakers play pretty good with an after
market radio which i got with the car.

Some units will switch hit. The premium units had a additional plug
which went to the amplifier in the rear. In non premium applications,
there was a jumper plug in this socket and the internal amplifier was
used only. The standard units used one of the long plugs for power
and the other to hook up speakers to. They look similar but are keyed
different. If the jumper plug is NOT in on one of these units there will
be no sound output on non premium applications.

And i doubt your speakers measured 63 ohms. Recheck your x1, x10 setting
on your meter. 6.3 i would believe. Most are around 4 ohms.

omg!  you're right!  its 6 ohms,  not sixty.  Sorry for this!!  (the
battery in my digital meeter is almost dead and it just didn't display
the coma.)

Bob, this is very interesting.  Although i can't imagine that switching
functionality because i don't have the factory speaker plug.  I made a
simple diagram of what i have now:
http://xs.to/xs.php?h=xs1108&d=06441&f=diagram.gif

i connected ISO speaker socket (8 pins)   to this radio according to
this pinout:
http://xs.to/xs.php?h=xs1108&d=06441&f=diagram.2.gif

There is a jumper plug attached to the CD changer socket, it shorts
1-3-5 and 2-4-6 pins,  when i removed it for a moment, there was no
sound at all.  Maybe those pins should be shorted differently, in order
to switch the radio into 'non premium mode' ??

There is also some pin (like a small plate)  between CD-changer socket
and speaker socket,  but it seems to be grounded to the chassis,
although i read somewhere that there could be +12 when the radio is
turned on.

I also found out, that minus speaker pins:  FL-, FR-, RL-, RR-  are not
grounded to the radio chassis , and are not connected together neither,
but maybe thats the design and its correct.
I checked the other radio (different brand) and minus signal outputs
were grounded.

Thanks for any help resolving this issue,  if any pictures would be
helpful let me know.

above links don't work, here are the correct ones:

I finally found out about the radio,  its Premium model,  it doest have
any internal amlifier.

I'm gonna hook it up to Blaupunkt GTA 4  4x55W.   I hope it works.
