Have a 1996 Ford ranger splash with a 5 speed 3.0 engine. It shifts hard
1,2 and grinds going into Rev unless it is shifted into a forward gear
first. cluch does not slip and seems to be adjusted right. any ideas would
be great.

Mine started to have gear clash shifting into 3rd, then
was hard to get into reverse.  I had to have the whole
clutch and the hydraulic throwout bearing replaced.
Also some plugs on top of the trans were replaced.
Worked like new afterward.

Your pilot bearing is getting stiff? Or the clutch disk is sticking
on the spline? Or the clutch didk is warped? Whichever, the clutch is
not fully releasing, and has been in that state for some time. Your
1-2 syncro is getting weak now and is not able to handle the drag.
Repairing the clutch will LIKELY solve the grind 1-2 if you get it
done soon enough.Otherwize you will need the syncro replaced as well.
