Anyone know how possible it would be to swap out the 3spd auto in my
88 escort for a 5spd manual (assuming I can find one)? Any
modifications necessary (firewall, etc.)?

You will need the pedal assembly from under the dash as well as all
the gearshift mechanisms and clutch parts. Wiring harness will likely
also be required, and you well need to remove plugs/plates/punchouts
for the new linkages. Likely not worth the trouble on an 88.

Also the half shafts are slightly different, lots of work. You really
need a parts car with a manual tranny if you want to keep your car, or
just find a nice 88, 89 or 90 with a manual? And I think there are
some differences in the 88 model year, 88 or 88.5, when the final 1st
gen style came out. Check out the 1st gen Escort forum on FEOA.net,
lots of help there.

Although it can be done it would be much more cost effective to simply buy
another vehicle. ;)
