How often should I replace the automatic transmission fluid in
my 2005 Expedition ?  It has 29K miles on it.

BTW, this vehicle has never been back to the dealer for repairs.
Never.  Just oil changes at my local Quik Lube.

I would recommend taking it to a real mechanic. The quick lube places
tend to mess up trucks and cars.

Look in your owner's manual as well as the maintainance schedule. One of
them should have the answer for which you are looking.

Ford recommends changing automatic transmission fluid every 30k miles.
I am not sure whether they require a complete fluid exchange or a drop
the pan and refill (a Ford dealer will probably claim you need a
complete fluid replacement). I owned two Expeditions (a 1997 and a
2003). I believed in changing the pick-up screen ("filter") and fluid
every 25k miles. A 2005 Expedition does not have a drain plug on the
torque converter, so unless you go to a place with a fluid exchange
machine, you will only change part of the fluid if you just drop the
pan. Stay away from Quick-Lube places. NEVER let one work on your
transmission no matter how great they claim their machine is. If they
threaten to "back-flush" your transmission run away.

I'd recommend finding a good independent mechanics or using the
dealer. A Ford dealer should use a fluid exchange machine to replace
all the fluid. Even if they do the fluid exchange, I'd want the filter
replaced.

I'd suggest that you join the Expedition Owner's Mailing List and get
an opinion on your options from the members of that group. See
