95 Bronco tranny oil change redux

I've finally changed the transmission oil in the E4OD.  Drained the
torque converter, dropped the pan, changed the filter.  Much thanks to
Tom Adkins and Lugnut, and others for the advice.

I siphoned most of the pan oil, using some vinyl tubing I had, through
the filler tube.  That saved an oily messy dropping the pan.  Worked
like a charm.  Thanks to an unknown author I read somewhere on the
internet!

When I dropped the pan, I inspected the gasket, trying to decide if it
was a reuseable one or not.  It wasn't cork, it wasn't cracked, and it
looked like the replacement one I got with the new filter.  I decided
to leave the old one on.

I cleaned the inside of the pan with brake cleaner.  Man!  That stuff
reeks!  Very stinky.  I wiped it out throughly.  I was afraid of such
a caustic substance remaining inside the transmission.  I hope I got
ALL of it!  I also cleaned the magnet.

The good news is the pan, the magnet, and the old fluid looked very,
very, very clean.  I kind of doubt I really needed to do this change.
But, that's the kind of screwball I can be about my vehicle.

I refilled with about 7 qts, ran the motor about 7 secs.  Then I added
about 7-8 more qts, ran the motor and shifted through the gears.  I
checked the dipstick with the motor running, and it looks about 1-2
qts low.   One thing, when I shut the motor off, there were some
strange noises coming from the transmission.  They sounded almost
electrical.

It got late, and tomorrow I will drive it a short distance, check the
dipstick, and top off.  Any advice or comments on what I've done and
plan to do tomorrow?

I topped it off, one quart, and drove it throughout the day.  No
problems, happy ending.

One thing you may notice on the E4OD after service is an
increase in the whining noise it makes especially right
after startup.  This is normal for the earlier vintage pump
used.  The later pumps are much quieter but, not worth the
effort in an otherwise good trans.  For some reason, they
quiet down in most cases after a couple thousand miles.
There are a couple of additives like LubeGard red that can
reduce this whine and improve the shift characteristics of
the trans.  This and one other are the only additives I have
ever used in a transmission and found to have any benefit as
far as doing exactly what they are advertised to do.  Many
of the shops in this area put it in every rebuild job
caliming it greatly reduces the number of performance
problems.

The gunk you saw in the pan is also quite normal.  It is a
collection of the wear material from the trans clutches.
The clutches wear just like the brake pads or the clutch in
a manual trans vehicle.  It just collects in the fluid to be
carried to the pan where it is "stored" until you service
the trans.  Service interval for the E4OD is in the 25-30K
mile range which should be fine unless you are known to have
overheated it at some time such as when towing more than you
should have or stuck it in the mud and abused it.  The
clicking you heard is also a normal part of the E4OD but,
was probably louder than normal as the solenoid pack is
normally submersed in fluid when the trans is "FULL".  It
was probably louder because it was not full at the time.

You should now be experiencing some level of personal gain
from having done this yourself.  It wasn't too tough a job
and you can use the $100 you save to take the wife out for
the evening and make her happy with your other handy work.

Lugnut,
You're right, it was quite satisfying to pull the whole thing off.
Good info about the solenoid pack and the LubeGard, although there are
no noticeable noises now.

The stuff in the pan I was worried about was the brake cleaner
residue.  There wasn't any gunk or metal in the pan.  It was clean
when I pulled it off.
