99 Ford Contour - heater motor

turn motor on, lose 2-3000 rpm, engine becomes very sluggish. Have to drive
with only forced heat and it is 10 degrees today.  Please help.

It sounds like the heater motor is putting a strain on the alternator
which in trun is causing the decrease in RPM.

could the heater motor be developing a short?
