I just got this 97 taurus as a fixer upper and put a 3.0 in it. (head gaskets blown on its motor). Got the motor in and running. Its running a little hot for my tastes. Fans are running. I am going to pull the water pump and check for impeller rotting. If the pump is ok or changed, that leaves the radiator and flushing. I have the ford PDF on this "brown coolant". How do you guys normally flush out the cooling systems on one of these and what chemical flush do you use? Is there a updated water pump for these? These engines are not known for that. I normally don't recommend brand names, but get an Airtex water pump. If nobody local carries them, get one from Northern Auto out of Sioux City, Iowa. This seemed to lead to head gasket failure in the otherwise rock solid 3.0 vulcan. Don't forget the bypass circuit and degas restrictor installation if not already done. Flush procedure is documented in Article 01-11-6. Its got the bypass hose around the heater core. Not sure about the degass restrictor. if its a metal insert in the small pipe it has it. I have the flush procedure. The engine came out of a running 97 with a bad trannie. put it in, and it seems to jump up 3/4+ on the heat gauge to fast for my tastes. Pulled the water pump off today and the impellers are intact. I am going to replace it new anyway. there was some corrosion on the outside of the pump housing and i am not sure if it was weeping, or it was just fluid from the coolant tank bubbling over. I also shot water and air through the radiator core in case it was plugged externally. It also has new thermostat with giggle valve in it. What type of flush do you recommend? Most people just have them towed to a junk- yard. I hear that cars are going for around $500 at junkyards, just for the metal. we dont flush these newer radiators anymore,just replace them . it was a waste of time flushing them . its possible the engine you put i has a problem . ive seen some of these with the waterpump impeller ccorroded away . if you run a wire from the radiator metal to the neg batter post it will stop this from happining. electrolasis. ---------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.minibite.com/america/malone.htm |
