The check engine light comes on on my 99 Taurus < 3.0 FI OHV >.  The
OBD reading is 0171, indicating lean mixture bank one.  Suggestion on
fix please-

I had a lean mixture bank one error once on a 97 CV.  It was resolved
by cleaning the MAF and resetting the code.

Here's some good info on Ford mixture error codes.

The first thing I would do would be to comapre the fuel trims for the two
banks... bank 2 could be lean but not lean enough to set a code.... yet.
Freez eframe data would be helpful as well to discover when the code was set
(at idle? at speed?).

FWIW, in all these years, I have seen the need to replace less than a
handful of O2 sensors....

Using the web information, I replaced the DPFE sensor and cleaned the
MAF twice.  After driving the car  between 1 and 5 miles, the check
engine light comes on again.  I'm getting lean mixture codes for both
front and rear banks.

Does this 99 Taurus have an inline fuel filter and might it be the
problem?

get some name brand gas like Chevron, the cheap stuff sets that code in
lots of cars.
