For the third time the nylon "actuator" for the ignition switch is
broken in my '95 Taurus. It's a major PITA to dig in to the steering
column's tilt-wheel machinery to replace this fragile, poorly-designed
part. So here's my proposed repair and a question.

Suppose I were to install a big old-fashioned starter button and a
couple of switches labeled RUN and ACCESSORY. Would this rig pass
the California smog test next year, or would this be considered a
modification of the "ignition system." Is there any other reason
not to do it?

 Go here:  http://www.colehersee.com/catalog_top/index.htm

Dig down to Switches - Ignition -

Find an ignition switch that has the connections you need - one or
two Accessory leads, etc., rip the factory POS switch out by the
roots, drill a 1" hole through a reinforced spot on the dash to the
right side of the column, and mount it in the dash.  Solved.

For simple, the 95400 or 956-4116 will work.

Watch the current ratings, these are meant for boats, tractors and
power equipment (or 1930s through 1960s cars) and only have 10-amp
rated ignition contacts and 10A - 20A - 30A Accessory circuits.  If
you need more, use a relay or two.

You lose the locking steering column function, but trust me that
doesn't slow them down much.  Go get a steering wheel club/cane lock.

"Modification of the ignition system" would be changing out the
computer or the distributor to a different model - all that ignition
switch does is provide an electrical power switch with some security.

It might shock them at the Smog Check, but a clueful mechanic will
blink twice, laugh his a.s off for a minute or two, check your work,
and then congratulate you on your problem solving skills.

If you get an a.shole or a moron, go somewhere else - if they say
nothing, take your money, and then fail the car just for that (without
saying anything) sic the State on 'em.  They like knocking
self-absorbed little Caesar's off their perch.

There are a bazillion people out there with old Taurus' (Tauri????) that
don't have this problem.... At first glance, it appears that the OP is
addressing the symptom without addressing the cause....

I wouldn't know for sure because I'm an overpaid dealer tech.... I would
like to know why the actuator broke, my own self.... But, sad to say, people
don't like to pay for that part...

FWIW... if someone offers you a "money back gaurrantee", it means they
expect that their "cure" isn't worth the powder to blow it to hell....
