Hi everyone. I'm taking my car in tomorrow and I want to be prepared
for what might happened.
My Escape started having a problem accelerating after 50 mph. It
doesn't have enough power to go faster and there's a clicking noise. I
have about 78K miles on it. The other symptom is the gas pedal is
sometimes difficult to push down on in the morning.
The torque converter was replaced last year at about 60K miles. Back
then the problem I had was it would have a very rough idle. This
current problem is completely different but I'm wondering if it could
be something else with the transmission.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Is the CEL on? If so, stop by an AutoZone or Advance auto parts and have the
code(s) read.

Not looking good for you. The Escapes have had loads of problems with the
transaxle; more so, it seems, with the 4WD. I have an '02 that so far, knock
on wood, hasn't had any problems with it. But then, I added an external
filter, and drain and fill it every ~15,000 miles.
Good luck tomorrow with it being something simple like a sensor.

Did this vehicle have a recall on the accelerator cable?

When did you last replace the fuel filter?
Have you ever had the throttle body cleaned?
What is the nature of the clicking noise? Is it continuous, or only
when you try to accelerate past 50?
Have you checked your CV joint boots?
Which engine and transmission do you have? 2WD / 4WD?

Update: They couldn't find anything wrong with it. A minor maintenance
service fixed the acceleration problem. I'm so glad it wasn't the
transmission again. I drove it for a while on the freeway and it's
fine. He said it could have been a bad quality fuel problem or
something with the oil.
For the gas pedal problem they recommended changing the cable first
and then maybe if that doesn't work, changing the throttle body. Does
that make sense?
C.E. - I just saw your post now. I should have asked them about
cleaning the throttle body. I just asked them to check the throttle. I
wonder if a cleaning would have fixed it instead of replacing the
cable. It's too late now since they ordered the part. Overall I'm just
glad it was about $360 for all. I was worried it would be much, much
more. Hopefully replacing the cable will fix it.

I'm glad it wasn't the tranny- that would have been VERY expensive. I
assume you're out of warranty?
There was a recall on the throttle cable, but I don't know if your year
was involved- my '02 was. It definitely made a difference.
If you're somewhat mechanically inclined, it's no big deal removing and
cleaning the TB, MAF and the rest of the intake system. The gasket set
is ~$9 from RockAuto.com. Makes for a nice Saturday afternoon project. If
you decide to tackle it, you might as well change the plugs, too- you
have to remove the upper TB to get to them on the V6.

Mine is a 2005. I asked about any recalls and he said no. I'm not
mechanically inclined at all so I'll just let them do it. I just hate
how they always replace something when maybe it just needs aligned or
something. Oh well I'm grateful it wasn't the trans.
