I'm a cabbie.I drive a 2004 Crown Vic.It's an ex- police vehicle.When my
company gets them they usualy have in excess of 150,000 kms on them.Just
recently it started to have wiring problems.I don't stand over the
mechanics' shoulders while they work on them, but I believe it was a
short of some kind. The only problem left is that the highbeams only
function in the flash mode, and that too will be fixed soon enough. It now
has over 280 k on it.

My point is that these cars have the ever-lovin' CRAP driven out of
them,(by drivers other than yours truly of course),they're "maintained"
by mechanics who are told to get em in and get em out in a hurry in no
uncertain terms, and yet I find that when they're looked after with just
a reasonable amount of care that they make terrific taxis. There are
always little things that could be better, but I don't expect miracles.

Unfortunately I suppose it would be considered rather too primitive by
todays standards: I can't fill er up with a garden hose and it doesn't
sport optional sails, but the gas mileage seems reasonable enough and the
customers find it quite comfy.

Thanks,
Lins

If you are in NYC you likely have noticed folks pass on hailing the
Bloomberg green cabs and wait for a CV.     ;)

I couldn't agree with you more.  I've got a new CV at work with
handling and performance options and lent it to a coworker for a long
trip.  He loved it's handling, ride, comfort, and general performance
including getting over 25 mpg for the trip.  His other two vehicles
are a Toyota Pickup 4x4 and a Dodge Viper with extensive engine work
putting out about 700 HP.

The fact is, these are great cars when properly optioned but people
have been brainwashed to believe they are awful.  Or their only
exposure to them is a ride in a Taxi with 250,000 miles on it and poor
maintenance.

There is not a $25.000 car on the market today that can come anywhere close
to comparing to the CV.  With age comes wisdom that is why the Grand Marquis
is the number one selling individual model vehicle in Florida   LOL

Thanks for the replies demi and mike, but I think I should have been more
specific in the title of my original post.It should have read: "In
defence of the Ford Crown Victoria as a taxi-cab."

Because the truth is that I don't know very much about Ford,in
general,at all.(I DO know the stock price and I kick my a.s for not
getting some the other day...but that's another story.)

All I really DO know about Ford is this one particular brand of car. With
the POSSIBLE exception of the '90 Caprice it is the best vehicle for a
taxi that I have ever driven.

Last night I had to take it off the road because the tail lights were
only working intermittently.Not Ford's fault.If our
garage(Grrrrrr!!!!!)had only fixed it right the FIRST time this could
have been avoided. Not bad for a vehicle with over 280 km on it huh?(Or
as we say up here in Ontario....eh?)

Thanks,
Lins
