I needed a new car so I went to the Ford dealership looking for a 2 door
compact.  I didn't like the Focus and that was the only compact Ford  made.
I went to the Chevy dealership and bought a Cobalt.  The next car I buy will
be a  midsize 2 door but I called Buick, Ford, GM, Dodge, and Chevy and find
the pickings slim.  I want a family car, not a sports car like a Mustang,
Corvette, etc.  I think I might have to buy a Japanese car instead of
American.  I'm thinking of buying a Honda Accord. Why did the American
automakers stop making the coupes?

Because people quit buying mid-sized coupes. Less than 10% of the
sales of Atltimas are coupes. Less that 8% of Camry sales are Solaras.
I don't have the numbers for the Accord Coupe vs. total Accord sales,
but I suspect the are also in the 10% of total sales range. GM used to
sell the Monte Carlo, essentially an Impala Coupe, but sales were
dismal. Ford could create a Fusion Coupe, but it is likely it would
never be more than 10% of Fusion sales, and at least some of those
sales would be "stolen" from Mustang sales.

One day people gripe that Detroit builds too many models and
variations, and then the next day someone else points out they don't
fill this or that particular niche market. I am sure all manufacturers
watch couple sales. If the Accord Coupe starts selling in large
numbers, I am sure you can expect mid sized coupes from Ford and GM.

Now, my question is, Why do you want a mid sized coupe? Have you
actually tried to get in the rear of a two door Accord? Do you want to
try and put a car seat back there and install a kid in the seat? For a
family car, a four door car makes a lot more sense than a coupe of any
size.

Coupes have always been attractive as "wannabe" sports cars.

Not priced in the stratosphere that, say, a Corvette is, but the 2
doors still fools most casual passers by that it's a "sporty" car not
a boring "45 year old Dad's grocery getter" 4 door "family" car.

I have an 06 Accord EX coupe I4. Great car with good performance out of the
166 hp 4 cylinder. Get 35 mpg on the highway with the 5 spd auto.  The new
Accord coupe I4 now has 190 hp or the V6 I thing around 260 or so.  The
Accord is made in Marysville Ohio.

They say they can't sell them.
The crap they've been passing off, no wonder.

My daughter wanted to replace her 1998 Neon Sport with a new coupe.

Ended up buying a 2008 Civic, built just down the road in Alliston
Ontario.
