I am not sure at all, but I think I had occasion to remove and replace
the one in my 96 Contour, and it only required prying off the trim piece
in front. I could be confusing this with another car, but I wouldn't
think you should have to take out the dash.

Was it anything like this (particularly pics 1, 2 & 4)?

I own one and I have the clock I changed in front of me. The
instrument panel bezel needs to be removed, which requires popping of
something like 6 screw covers and removing something like 8 screws,
then manuevering thebezel off. If I remember correctly the steering
column covers need to come off to provide enough clearance to get the
bezel off. The wiring to the clock and rear defogger switch need to be
disconnected, and then the clock can be snapped out carefully - by
releasing 4 tabs.
I'm going to have to do it again sometime to replace the backlight
bulb in the clock which failed about a week after I installed the
replacement clock (which was not an easy job, what with my car being a
mystique and the clock I got being a Contour - same clock but
different front case)
