mondeo engine "pulsing"??

2001 2L manual, just started "pulsing", seems like it's running on 2
cylinders 90% of the time, then literally, every second, the other 2 join
in, but only for 1/10th second approx.

Does this kind of fault have any explanation / solution??

Bad coil?

I thought about that but I didn't think anything in the coil could be aware
of 1 second intervals so precisely?
