I see this is a common problem...for both the front and REAR springs.

I'm lucky the tire was not cut.

I know there was a recall for the FRONT springs....

My question...... is there any recall for the REAR springs or will the
Ford dealer or Ford cover this in any way or should I just go to my
local mechanic...

Car has 135,000 mi

thanks

I think this is a common problem with all cars. The springs don't last
forever.

I had the same problem with my Contour. And when I was in the shop
last time, another costumer had the same problem with his Escort. It
is probably more common now because cars last longer.

A better fix might be a new Taurus, Fusion or Focus.

I never heard of it happening in the 45 years I have been driving.

The recall was to install shields so that the tire would not be
punctured.
The recall did not involve any free replacement of springs.

I asked about my 2001 and the local Ford Dealer said they were not
covered under any recall like the front springs are.

The front springs are covered, so they cover them with a shield or
replace them if broken.

I was told by a friend that works for Ford, it's best to just go get
some Monroe quick struts, and install them.

I purchased a set on ebay for $250 and replaced them myself.

Just a word to the wise though....do NOT take an impact wrench to the
pinch bolt. I did, and it was over a half inch out, and I broke off
the bolt in the hub.

Long story, short, I had to remove the entire hub assembly and get
that broken bolt out (and the strut was still in it). Turned what
should have been an hour job into a 3 hour job.

However, the other side, I took the bolt out 4 turns, and then lubed,
it, and drove it back in 2, then out 4 and in 2 until if finally came
out. Doing it that way, I replaced that side in less than an hour.

I have seen the same strut now listed for $109 for each at the same
place I bought mine. It makes the car ride better, and it sure does
not sit down in the rear.

Oh, and you should replace both of them.

Good luck!!

For future reference, if you break the head off one of the lower bolts that
hold the strut to the steering arm, an easier way to remove the remainder
of the bolt is to buy a hardened nut that fits the bolt thread, and a
handful
of regular nuts the next size larger that fit over the bolt without binding.
Using these oversized nuts as thick washers, tighten the hardened nut onto
the bolt to draw out the bolt. Remove the nut and add another oversize
nut to the stack and repeat until the bolt is fully extracted.

I hope you replaced the broken bolt with a hardened (10.8 or better) bolt
and a self-locking (torque) nut, along with some anti-seize. You don't
want those bolts to loosen and shear off.
