According to the handbook that came with the car if the light on the
dash "continues to flash I should have the system serviced at my Ford
dealer."

1. What does this generally mean?

2. Is there an alternative to the dealer?

3. If not, what am I looking at cost wise?

TIA

It generally means that there is a concern with the supplemental restraint
system.

Yes, there are alternatives to the dealer... I have no idea who they are
because I don't know what they have for tools.... I do know that there isn't
a shop out there that will look you in the eye and say "my tools suck". ...
even when they should.

Cost wise? How can one estimate that when the cause has yet to be
determined.????

A lot of folks refuse to go to the dealer.... "the dealer is bad". In
reality, it is each individual employee that is either bad or good. And
consumers are at their mercy.

Thanks, I suspect it is your last sentence here that leads to the first,
("folks refuse").

You can determine the trouble code by the pattern of the flashing light.
For instance, if the light flashes 3 times quickly, then a pause, then
5 times quickly, then a longer pause, the code is 35. Determine the
code and it can be looked up.

Until the problem is fixed, assume that the air bags won't deploy
in an accident, and drive accordingly.
