One of the lugs on the rear left wheel of my 97 Taurus is stripped all to
sh.t. The car is 4 wheel disc brakes (gl series). Is it hard to change the
lug, or a pretty simple job? Any hints for what to look out for?

97 GL? Rear disk? Hmmmm.  Anyway, no big deal. Remove the caliper, caliper
mount, rotor. Then you can get to the stud. Beat it out with a hammer, pull
the new one in with a lubed lug nut.

Perfect, that's what I figured, just wanted to make sure there wasn't any
tricks to look out for..

Thanks!

I've never owned a '97 GL without 4 wheel disc brakes.  Do you have one?

yes, GL with the plain 12 valve 3.0L. Maybe its an option with the other
engine...? And if it does have the other engine, is it still a GL? I dont
know.....

Then I'll bet you do not have a wagon.  The wagons have 4 wheel discs.

Mine is a Vulcan 3.0, sedan, GL series, and 4 wheel disc brakes.

Same here - Vulcan 3.0 GL, and 4 wheel disc brakes - except it's a wagon.

At some point later, I think on the Gen4 in 2000 model year, the 4 wheel
discs became standard on, & only available on, all wagons.

Use a hammer. This is a common issue with Ford stuff. Buy some extra lug
bolts and keep some spares in the glove box.

Really!  Is that recent or is the issue actually with bag-head minimum wage
tire jockeys.

I have never ever had a Ford lug break or strip.

Actually, it was due to a ham-fisted mechanic that mine is stripped. Went to
get some new tires at Costco, couple of weeks later I pulled off the hubcaps
to check the torque on the nuts, and noticed one had been put on cross
threaded (I'm guessing with a air-gun). The thread is totally f.cked.

I was pleased to find out that the Wal-Mart I frequent for tires actually
torques the lugnuts.  I saw him do it.

<anecdote>

My dad once went to a Pep Boys garage to have some work done and some
bolts needed to be torqued to complete the job.  He was a mechanic, had
owned and worked on his own car since he was 8 years old, and owned his own
garage for several years, so he knows what's going on in these places.  He
hasn't been able to do some kinds of work because of his arthritis in
recent years, so he hasn't kept up with the computerization of cars, but he
knows the basics and can give better and better advice the older the car
is.
Anyway, he saw a mechanic take after these bolts without a torque
wrench.  My dad said, "Hey!  Those need to be torqued!"
The mechanic said, "Well, we don't have a torque wrench."
My dad had one in the back of the car, so he set the torque and handed
it to the mechanic.
The guy starts twisting away.  The wrench ticks and the guy just keeps
on turning it.
My dad says, "Hey!  Didn't you hear it pop?"
    "Yeah."
    "Well, that means it's torqued!"

</anecdote>

Sometimes you just never know who's working on your car.  I wonder if maybe
we should be able to decide which mechanic will actually work on our cars
-- pick the ones who have done good work in the past.  Even a garage with a
bunch of good mechanics might hire a dumb-a.s one day, and it might be the
day that you're in there to have some work done. :-)
