2000 Contour 126,000 miles
Check engine light indicated "variable cam timing over retared, bank 1"
Car ran OK until shut off, not won't restart and timing acts as if its way
off?
Any thoughts?

This thing has a timing belt or chain. Could have jumped time. Replace
belt\chain and set timing marks where they should be.

If it is bank 1, it is probably the V6, which has a chain.

It could definitely be the chain jumped.
