Okay... I just bought some new speakers for my 04 Focus Zetec.  I'm all
ready to install them but I've fallen at the first hurdle.  The wires
that were connected to the Ford factory speakers are white and grey.
Which is positive and which is negative?  Or even more helpful to an
amateur like myself: which connects to the thicker of the two din plugs
(positive?) and which the thinner (negative?).

And yes... I know I could have bought some Focus speaker wire adapters
but I thought a crimper and some butt connectors would be just as easy
and I've already started cutting wires!

White is often a ground, but sometimes the terminals are marked + or-  Or,
just connect them either way ; the right way will be clear, the wrong way
will be muffled or noisey.  Oh, and one mistake I learned; unless you are
running a power amp, don't install speakers rated at a higher wattage than
your stereo; when you crank up the volume, the stereo will not be able to
put out enough power to drive the speakers, and the sound will break up. I
always thought it would be the other way around, but actually, speakers
rated just less than the stereo output works best..

quick tip for ya. connect a 1.5 volt battery (aa, a, c, d cell doesn't
matter) to the speaker. if the cone moves out, the positive of the
battery is connected to the positive of the speaker. If the cone moves
in, the positive of the battery is connected to the neg of the speaker.
You should be able to figure it out from here :)hopefully you know which
wire went to which side of the speaker before you cut them :(
